Ouch Hernia, how long will I be out?

Rules

Strong as Lead
It's not offical yet as I can't get to a doc till after the Christmas weekend but a quick talk with the Pops seems to confirm its the same as the ones he has had... Feels like a groin pull along with the sensation somone is squeezing my right nut a bit to hard. So the question to those who have had this before is how long can i expect to be out?

laporoscopic hernia surgery is a same day procedure done under general anesthesia. people are on their feet and back to work within days but how long until you can hit the gym again I don't know but I'd imagine you wouldn't be able to go all out at first.

Thanks MPPM. Hope I can get back to lifting in a month :crying:

How'd it happen?

Not sure, It didn't happen while lifting but I'm sure its the cause... changed up my form on squat but didn't lower the weight (didn't have a problem at the time), woke up the next day to lower abdominal pain... took about 3 days untill it showed up as pain in the nut and groin. Might be good to note it seems my genetics are not so good in this respect as my dad has had 2 in his life time.

hernias can be acute or chronic meaning a one time stressfull event can cause it or just general wear and tear over time tear the abdominal wall. if it is a hernia a doc will most likely recommend surgery as hernias don't repair themselves and last thing you want is bowel to get obstructed. having an ostomy bag for six months is not a pleasant experience

can u feel a bulge anywhere?

Mine was abdominal, the doc said 3 months NO lifting, then 3 more months of light lifting before I could go all out. I explained it happened on a 620 lb deadlift, and intended on getting back to that level and more. He said if I did excatly as advised no problem. I follwed the advice to a "T" and about 7-1/2 months latter it snapped again on a heavy pull. I didn't bother having it fixed again. There is still a small tear where my belly-button USED to be. But it hasn't got any worse. That was about 8 years ago. I do feel the strain doing heavy pulls, squats, GM's, but with the belt on tight, and a lot of focus on HEAVY ab work I am fine.

Absolutly no bulge... 8:30 tommorow morning I'll know for sure whats up.

Damn IA I can't say thats what I wanted to hear but I'm glad to see someone can still lift with this, do you have much pain?

There has been no pain since about 1 month after the surgery. When going real heavy though, I can feel pressure on it though. Everyone that lifts heavy needs to make HEAVY core work a top priority. This will help in that regard.

NO HERNIA!!! Hurray, sort of... Had a bunch of protein in my urin so they are checking for kidney problems. Nice part is it is most likely not cancer :) Probably a kidney stone or muscle strain causeing the pain, still the protein in the urin thing is a bit sad.

The protein in the urine is likely a non-issue. Docs that are not familiar with weight training make this mistake all the time. Tell your doc what you do in the gym and about protein consumption. Lifting heavy makes protein turnover go through the roof. You are likely just fine. Don't let a bunch of docs that are not knowledgable scare you. tell them you want a doc that understands what lifting does to a persons metabolism. They will likely have a YOUNG specialist that knows and he will probably give you a good bill of health. Many older docs are CLUELESS about this.

Thanks IA, I'm getting a follow up so we'll see whats up. And yeah its an old doc that has been retired for a while (as most university health sevices have). The protein along with my elevated bloodpressure (juped 10-20 pts a few months ago) is why she ordered additional tests. Beter safe than sorry and insurance covers most of it :)

In case anyone searches hernia on here I'll just add this info... a dead givaway that I probably did not have a hernia is the fact that I couldn't associate the onset of pain with a specific action, i.e. It didn't happen when lifting.

Im lifting right now with a bulging disk and somewhat of a hernia. No bulging but I too have the "balls in a vice" feeling often and just a general strain when I lift heavy. I feel ya pain Rules. Only thing is, a hernia can just sneak up on you. You dont necessarily have to rip it while lifting.

I'm a bit shocked that 2 mods are lifting through what i thought were serious conditions. Are most heavy lifters working with some sort of injury?

Aslo what do you do to ease the "balls in vice" feeling. I'd give anything for a few minutes without pain...

Paraumbilical hernia, same thing I have. I first got in last october when, seriously, i shot up while laying down. I was half asleep and the phone rang, i sat straight up and it felt like I pulled my abs. Went to the doc and he said it wasn't serious enough for surgery and it might repair itself over time. He gave me some stuff for the infection and that was it. It did indeed heal over a few weeks and I was back up to 100% within a month. This september I played badminton for the first time in a long while and it came back, I stayed away from the gym for a couple of days and was just mindfull of doing any squats or deads or ab work. The docs both told me that if it doesn't get strangulated then you don't have to worry about it.
Good to hear you don't have a hernia though.
