Hi there. I'm new to this whole thing. I'm 43, no kids, I work a job that's mainly at a desk with some time in the field.

Here's my issue. I can't seem to lose weight.

I'm an ethical vegetarian for more than 20 years. I only mention that so you guys get an idea of how I eat. stir fry veggies and non animal proteins, fruit, water, coffee the occasional sweet and lots of nuts. I also eat cheese, both dairy and non-dairy.

For the last 4 months, I've been counting my calories and logging in my workouts on myfitness pal. My calories are almost never over 1600 per day. I've been cutting down on my carb intake as well. I am a recreational road cyclist. My workouts at the gym consist of 35 to 40 minutes of weights and then 30- 35 mins of cardio. usually the eliptical and the bike. I do cardio if I haven't done a short (45 to 60 min) ride earlier before work. I work out 4 to 5 times a week.

I am 5 feet 8 and weigh 155. I can't seem to make my goal weight of 135. which is where i am most comfortable and everything fits well. I'm also retaining water for some odd reason.

what can I use to cut the water, the fat and the weight. and what is the problem. I should have been at my goal weight by now, and I'm not even close. this is the heaviest I've ever been and I hate it.:nonono2:

Hi DarkGreens
Welcome :)

Losing weight basically comes down to calories in calories out, u need to eat less than the amount of calories your body requires a day based on your activity level.
Based on your heigh & weight if u had very little activity to med (1-3 days of excercise) your TDEE should be roughly Between 1,750 to 1,980 (ofcourse the most accurate way to calculate this is knowing yoru Body fat %.

If your calories are too low your body's metabolism will slow down to adjust to the low calories.. if u lose weight it will be at a much slower rate. Also the timing of your carbs is important.. why don't u post your current diet so we can better advise u.

Are u sure u are counting the calories right ?

Also how much water are u drinking ?
bloating can be caused by not drinking enough water.

Hope this helps :)

excellent post mrs p!

Agreed w/ Mrs. P. I thought the same. I suspect your metabolism slowed and you are in "starvation mode."
