Pulling with short legs....

I have short legs and a longer torso. As a result, i find that my shoulders drift past the bar when i deadlift. However, when i try to keep my shoulders behind the bar, the movement feels more like a squat. Should i continue letting myshoulders drift forward? Is that normal for my body type?

I would think you have an advantage because you have less amount of space to travel that bar..Now lean back and pull that fucker up your shins :)

One thing I have learned is to drive with your legs until you get the bar to your knees, then use your back to complete the lift. This may help as you might be letting the weight guide you forward before you start to pull.
