Shin Splints

I've been getting some bad shin splints when I work out. I wasnt able to jog today and had to walk instead cause it hurt too bad. I've also noticed small bumps, more so on my right shin then left, and just along the shin bone mostly - I've read that this may be swelling for the muscle surround the bone and since it has no place to go it cases small bumps.... Anyone had any experience with shin splints and any suggestions on what helps other than to just rest cause that only works temporarily, and it always comes back.

oh wow,i do feel sorry for you!!! Ive been through the same thing, I used to run on an incline treadmill an hour everyday, and the same symptoms developed for me,and i tried every thing in the book, eating more bananas, prune juice, mustard etc.....but finally ask a PT and an Orthopedic surgeon about it,and they told me to use an elliptical when i run,and told me that it was in the impact on a flat surface that finally messed up my shin splints, they told me that you are forcing all of your weight down straight on your shins when you run or walk, and said the ellipitcal would eliminate that, and it did,i do the elliptical now, then like twice a week i will run or walk fast on a treadmill or on the walking track....hope this helps

Thanks so much, I'll try just about anything that may help - lol :)

I get really bad shin splints too. I also use an eliptical. I got them when I was in high school football really bad, but back then, they didn't realize that I had high arches. They used to tape them every practice (to keep the muscle on the bone). It could have been avoided w/ orthodics. Sucks. Anyway, I'd go w/ the elliptical or riding a bike. And I'd look in to some orthodics, it's worth a doc visit and $180 for a pair which is what I did.

Do I need to go to a specialist for orthodics?

Another, less expensive, alternative is going to a Dr Scholl's custom fit, foot mapping location. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm planning on it to see if it works for a 2nd pair. It's basically a machine they have where you step on it and it

Store Locator | Dr Scholl's® Custom Fit® Orthotics

Fyi, you still have to baby the shin splints, but I think the orthodics give you some relief. If you get them feeling 100% they may prevent them from flaring up again, but I would try to work in some non antagonistic exercises along w/ the runs. Elipticle and bike are my short term suggestions.

Good luck..

Make sure you are stretching out your calves lots when you get shin splints. Shortened calves will put lots of stress on the anterior tibialis muscle. Also wearing heals frequently can contribute to short calves. Ice massage on the anterior tib. muscle is very helpful. Also I agree you should switch to eliptical or bike until they calm down. You can get fitted for orthotics by a podiatrist & some Chiropractors fit them as well.

I used to have TERRIBLE shin splints when I had to ruck. I stretched my legs out very well, and kept a tube of muscle rub on me. Though it's your shines that hurt, and not your muscle, muscle rub helped out a good bit.

Thanks everyone for all your help. As an update: I dont have the money to get an eliptical nor do I have a gym members (I never go cause it's too inconvinet, but I work out like crazy at home - plus I hate people watching me work out) but I have done a lot of other things to help out. I've been stretching my shins/calfs daily (I find I can easily do this at work, lol). I've been using a rub on them when they're real bad. And I started using peptide injections to help with recovery (helps A LOT!!!). So although they're still there and can sometimes get discomfort from them in the past couple weeks they have improved tremendously, to where they no longer interfer with my training :)

Thanks again everyone :)
