Shoulder Injury?

Doing rear delts on the reverse fly machine today I felt something "tear". I had my headphones on so I felt the vibe through my body. My right shoulder hurts, nothing too sharp, just a continuous dull pain. Hurts only a little to move my arm about, sort of like it normally does when I hit my shoulders hard.

But it hurts as I bring my arm across my face. The pain is centrally located right where my trap connects to my shoulder. The pain during this movement feels like a muscle cramp but just a tad bit sharper. It's like there is "pressure" where the trap hits the shoulder.

There is no swelling or bruising.

Thoughts? Does this type of injury seem familiar to anyone? Just give it some rest and see if my movement gets restricted? I have no medical insurance at this point but will hit the local free clinic if I need to.

Thanks!

good luck getting an MRI at the free clinic w/in a reasonable time. ive been waiting 6 months for one.... until then, rest and ice alot until it doesnt hurt anymore. ive hurt my shoulder 3 times and each time after i couldnt do incline bench press for like 2-3 months. after u feel it gets better dont do anything to aggrevate it.. good luck, exaggerate your symptoms to the dr when u see him, you'll get faster care

This happen to me but in front of my shoulder while I was dumbbell pressing on the incline my arm went far back.but what I did was I used a tennis ball nd located the pain nd I put pressed it up againts my shoulder nd wall and move it around kind of like a deep tissue massage.worked for me

MRI? Crap. Luckily I start a new gig soon as the administrator/director of a medical clinic so I'll have health insurance within a few months.

Ice it and rest it... 3 days of ice compression 20 minutes at a time. Hope you didn't do anything too severe to it

I tore a muscle in my shoulder too. It's been a month now and it's just starting to feel better. I injured it doing incline dumbells. I couldn't do inclines or bench heavy weight for a month. My doc said to do light shoulder/rotator cuff exercises and ice it after every workout. I also took a full week off (did cardio and some legs) and didn't aggravate it. It does suck b/c you use that muscle for a lot. Chest, arms, back, legs, etc. Rest and ice like smilee said. Good luck.

I have done the same thing with my shoulder a few times. I never like resting it completely so i still do light shoulder/rotator cuff exercises. Healing can take a little longer but you at least maintain full range of motion.
I keep a couple of bags of frozen peas in the freezer just for this. 15 min of Ice everyday.
Just make sure the weight is light enough your not working it too hard or doing more damage, only use to maintain movement range and promote blood flow to the area.

Yep I did it too. A lot of guys hurt shoulders and knees. That's why I tell guys don't lift weights, train your muscles. A lot of guys you see at the gym try to press as much weight up as possible with horrible technique. That's why i say work your muscles and not just push weight. By all means am I saying don't lift heavy, just simply saying do it with good form. If you don't you end up hurting yourself. I'm not say that's what you did bro, cuz people just tear shit cause they tear shit. Lol But anywho good luck Steve and I hope its just a minor strain and nothing serious. Good luck on the new job as well.

Yeah I'm going to do just legs and cardio for the rest of this week with some minor rotator stuff to keep the bloodflow and movement in my shoulder.

I built up my shoulders really nicely during this last cycle and I have not lost any strength during post cycle therapy (pct). I think I messed up by letting my muscles cool down too much. On the way from the dumbbell rack to the reverse fly machine I had a gym member stop me and ask me for some advice. I spent about 10 minutes with him and then resumed my workout. In hindsight, I should have gone lighter to start out with.

Friday I managed to do some medium heavy flat bench, some light incline bench, some medium heavy 45 degree lat pull downs, and some light rows. All were done on Hammer Strength machines so I could immediately ditch the weight if needed. I only extended as far as I could without feeling pressure on my shoulder - pressure, not pain. It felt good to get a pump and it felt good to get some blood flow and movement to the shoulder. I haven't used the Hammer Strength machines in a long time but they really made me remember how much they isolate the chosen muscle. I'll probably continue using those machines until my shoulder heals. Plus, it'll probably do my body good to do a different type of work out for a few weeks given that I've just come off a cycle where I did some pretty heavy lifting.

you got to get a MRI with no insurance it going to cost loot.

I just had one done on my knee a few months ago without using my insurance, you can shop around on MRI's just like anything else. I found a place (in Arizona) that did one for $300 cash. Cash price is actually cheaper than they charge if you go through insurance, and if your deductible is pretty high than just paying cash would be way cheaper. My deductible is $1000, and using my insurance the MRI would have cost me $600, so I saved a lot just going in and saying I wanted to pay cash for it.

Stevenmd, I am by no means a doctor, but have had a few joint injuries/surgeries. Shoulders aren't something to mess with, even if it feels better you may still be doing more damage to it. You are better off spending the money on an MRI and not having anything wrong with it, then not getting one and making it worse and needing surgery to fix it. My 2 cents would be find a place to get an MRI and see what the doc says. Hopefully all you did was strain something and you just need rest.

exactly bro... basically "youre a bodybuilder, not a power lifter." thats what i tell the young kids at my local gym trying to push stupid heavy weights.. all you really need is enough to stimulate growth. almost everytime ive made the mistake of letting my ego guide my workouts when i was younger, ive ended up with a strained shoulder, wrist, low back strain etc. then having to take time off. older and wiser now Lol
