over the years I have used pretty much all the approaches, did powerlifting for a while and built a great core along with some decent lifts, ie, I have a video of me pulling 500lbsx9 reps at a bodyweight of 210lbs...
for years I have been going with more of a mediu, volume approach, 3-4 evercises per bodypart, total of 12 sets for something like chest, maybe 15 for back
