Wannabe PowerLifter
i was just wondering if i could do something like m1t to get my strength up cause i dont want to gain alot of weight.. and if anyone knows what the average lifts are for people weighing in at 181..? (powerlifting) i was thinking i might wanna try to go to a meet but i dont wanna get laughed out...

no one gonna laugh at you at a meet less you act like an asshole. you seem like a nice guy so it aint gonna happen. if you use m1t or something like that make sure you do a non tested meet. you will test positive off of m1t in a tested meet. dont worry about the other guys numbers, your battle is and always will be with the steel. and what ever you do dont look at the top womans totals for the 148-181s. youll never do a meet then. =0)

well i want to get their naturally but im stuck i can get 335 twice with a person behind me.. (some pyschological thing i guess) but on my own i struggle with 300.. i guess i just hit a plateau and was thinking of taking the easy way out... but ive tried your 5x5 and other recommended things but i found the best thing for getting through a plateau is to keep going no matter what... i dont think i will enter a meet for atleast another year or year and a half so i have some time even if they are tested...

i dont like 5x5 so dont put that on me. =0)

i guess you talking about benching numbers.

perhaps if you focused more on squats and deads your bench numbers will climb as well. plus if you stuck then you may be slightly overtrained.

just do a nontested meet and dont worry about it. most tested feds require three years clean to qualify for drug free. does this mean all are clean? no it means some people cheat. no really......

if you wanna put up some bigger numbers you gotta change your routine. plus you say you tried my stuff and it didnt work. i just mentioned to you a couple of weeks ago about trying something different. you aint had time to try anything new.

if it aint working why just keep going and going. that makes no sense. thats like pushing a car up to a gas station and putting air in the tires then push the car back on the road and keep going. =0l

if you hittin 335 for a dbl at 181 and raw you will do OK i a meet at the laocl level, esp if you get a shirt and learn how to use it. or just lift raw as they have raw and assited divisions.

PullinBig, how does increasing your squat/deadlift make your bench go up?

I feel the same way about entering a powerlifting meet as this thread starter does, about being laughed at, but we talkeda bout that in another thread already.

I'm still cutting and probably wont enter a meet until I am done cutting and have been trying for strength/size as the primary goal for a year. But anyway right now Im 270 lbs @ 23%bf 6'3. I can do 240 on the bench (my bench likes to take it's time going up), deadlift 425, and squat about 275. Huge increases from when i started a year ago at 342 lbs and weak as all hell. I train with a 5x4 routine, but have seriously been thinking to do that low volume beginner routine you put up on here.

Is that routine suited for people that are cutting too?

99% of the guys at a powerlifting meet are the nicest guys you will ever meet , most would loan you a bench shirt or suit if yours blew out knowing that you might beat them in their own gear , they will help you get in your shirts/suits and spot you or even offer advice if they see you screwing up . being laughed at is the least of your worries .

dont worry about the other guys numbers, your battle is and always will be with the steel.

if you never listen to another piece of advice from pullinbig , listen to this one . the other guys in your weight class arent your opponents , the plates and the bar are your opponents . they are your best friends and your worst enemies .
you will never do a meet if you wait till you think your ready , if your benching 335 raw you will definately be over 4 in a GOOD shirt once you learn how to use it and train accordingly , 450 wouldnt be unrealistic if you are weak off the bottom and strong at the top . do your research invest in a good shirt and start training for a shirted bench .

You asked how does increasing your squat make your bench go up? Squats although they emphasize your legs and glutes, are an overall body exercise. They put enough stress on the entire system to make you stronger overall. Good form, ass to the ground is important if you want squats to really work for you.

ass to the ground? i thought just beyond parallel was sufficient enough..?
ass to the ground/grass is a figure of speech many of us use anything below parallel is good stuff . :)

o ok, problem is at my gym you arent really allowed to do free standing so i have to use the smith machine and i just set the stoppers just below my ass, is a smith machine squat good enough though?

smith machine isnt a squat bro , any place that doesnt allow free squats isnt a gym .

You aren't allowed to do freestanding movements? WTF kind of daycare center is that?

Do they make you wear a helmet and steel toed boots too? I bet they have a sign in back WEIGHTS ARE FOR DECORATION ONLY

You will NEVER succeed in an environment like that. As smith machine squat is not anything like a free squat. I don't even have to ask if they let you deadlift. Surprisingly, this is something that many so-called gyms do not allow also. I often get a new training cleint that tells me he'd really like to deadlift, but his gym doesn't allow them to be done. Same answer--get a new gym!

i can deadlift but they dont want me squatting cause some asshole high school kid blew his knees out or something so they get scared when i squat.. but every other leg day a kid from my school works so i can do freestanding like twice a month.. still gay though some little hotshot prolly all juiced up thought he squat more than he could and now i suffer cause of it..

wtf has juice got to do with him getting hurt.

squat as deep as you can go (barring a medical condition). if you cutting them off then you prolly no where near your bottom.

mudge thats funny as hell

juice doesnt have to do with his injury neccesarily, but this younger kid that juiced to young got all boosted up and went heavier and heavier until he got injured.. so maybe juice is the culprit.. imo you shouldnt juice till your atleast 24 or 25..

bringing juice into this conversation is rediculous. anyone can get hurt. and just cause you juicing dont mean you gonna get stronger, if you dont eat rigt or train right hardly anything happens. its obvious you have no experince with juice. perhaps you should stick to something you know about. or if you have questions about juice.
:)

all i know about juice is that you shouldnt throw that shit in your body until you've reached physical and mental maturity.. too bad i havent cause i'd love to do one cycle.. but i guess i got a couple more years left, plus i cant afford juice and a good diet right now
