Traumatic Injury Recovery

Looking for a little rehab advice. I had a massive right low extremity fracture many months back. Broke my tib/fib in 7 places. They put in an intermedullary rod in my tibia which has messed up my knee to some degree. I've lost a significant amount of muscle and as you might expect have gained a great deal of fat. I'm not a big guy; my ideal weight is probably a good 155 and I'm pushing 190 right now. My right quad is maybe 2/3 the size of my left. Maybe...

Long story short I'm finally able to walk again and I'm getting back into the gym. Just curious if anyone has suggestions regarding additives to help in this situation.

First off, that's great you're able to walk again. You have to take in consideration that when running gear you're going to want to push the limits and this could cause you to hurt your leg again.

Whats your age?

As far as the fractures go, there's very minimal risk for injury there due to the implants but I hear what you're saying about pushing it.

I have not. I've done some cutting cycles in the past but nothing for gain. I'm not a big guy at 5'6". At my best I was pushing 225 x 5 off the bench but not really going for hugeness. That was all just routine, diet, and the protein/supplement game. I really don't want this recovery to take a year or more and it just feels like with my same old routine that it will. Pre accident I was a very active kayaker, hiker, surfer, rock climber, snowboarder and obviously lifter. It all starts back in the gym but those other activities seem pretty far away. I've been swimming my ass off to get moving again but its not doing much for my shrunken leg.

And to be more clear, basically what I'm asking is does anyone have advice for supplements (not even necessarily AS) that are known to help speed recovery of a localized damaged/atrophied muscle group. I definitely want to pursue a novice cycle as well after I cut down a bunch.

Ok got it. I would say just run a cycle of just test e at 400 to 500mg EW. This would help you build muscle in your leg and help with losing weight with the right diet. I will say this tho, most people that run one cycle will end up doing more cycles. SO make sure that this is the road you want to go down. As for supplements, most dont do anything make take your money. Read all the stickys if you do chose to run a cycle because there is so much that can be done wrong.

I don't think there's any supplement for that besides tb500 maybe but muscle memory will be your friend. It's always easier getting it back after having had it. Good luck in your recovery/progress :)

Thanks for the advice. I've been learning a lot on here and being in the medical field I'm doing my research to make sure I don't make any mistakes. DreDay187 posted austinite's article on successful first time cycles. That was helpful. I'm in no rush to dive in too deep. I'm the kind of guy that researches something to death before making choices. Well... unfortunately not with women sometimes, but you know what I mean. Now I just have to drive to Canada I guess.

That looks interesting. I'll read up on it. I do also have damage to my patellar tendon as it was cut down the middle to install a full length rod. Had a massive effusion for weeks. Thats resolved but it still hurts like a bastard. I'm looking into platelet rich plasma and autologous stem cell therapy. These new therapies for acute tissue/tendon injuries sound pretty cool. Expensive though.

Extremely expensive at the moment. In your case, I would just hop back in the saddle and start lifting. Heavy squats and deads will help with the atrophy in one leg. Look at 308power's thread on here, he busted his knee badly squatting and 10wks later he's back to a 405 squat for reps. Inspiration if I do say so.

I noticed that about the tb500. Especially for something that is still classified as a research substance. And I was just reading 308's thread. Inspirational indeed. I'm thinking basically what you said for a plan. I've been back in the weight room for a while, making slow progress. I figure I have some more work to do before taking on a beginners cycle. At least it seems like it might be kind of a waste to do at this point in the game.

I agree, running a cycle now is not optimal. Wait until you have decent time back in the gym. Getting stronger quicker with gear and not having been in the gym for a while is a recipe for another injury. Tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue do not get as strong as quickly as muscles do.

Couldn't agree more. Seen plenty of cycles end early because of these reasons.

I second the TB500 vote. TB is a lifesaver once you cross the wrong side of 30.
