Tuna, bad to use often for bulks?

I always found that tuna goes great with a lot of stuff and I use to eat it a lot, but recently someone told me that the mercury in it can really add up over time and that ur system takes a while to clear it up.

he basically suggested no more than 3-4 cans a week.

I know some guys that use to eat 1 can a day at least.

Any one have any input?

I don't think two cans a day for a full grown adult is going to cause too much of an issue. But, if you ARE going to consume 2 cans a day I would consider eating skipjack tuna over albacore as it contains roughly 3x less mercury. A smarter choice, and also a tastier choice IMO.

Also the mineral Selenium, which is an antioxidant, can help protect one against excess mercury. Selenium binds to mercury and decreases its bioavailability. The same tuna that contains mercury also contains Selenium :)

I don't eat much tuna now a days, but when I'm not feeling like cooking a pack of chicken straight from the freezer, I'd opt to just crack open some tuna and mix it up.

I was just wondering input from u guys and what u think.

I've never heard of skipjack before. I'll check it out at the store next time. I wonder if it's more expensive or something or does it taste much diff at all?

Even so I don't think I'd exceed even 2 can/day average. Maybe 2 once in a while, but not often.

IMO tuna is easier to eat compared to 4 oz chicken, which is about the same macros as a can of tuna. Bout 130 cals and 23-25g Prot average for either 1

Skipjack is actually cheaper, and I personally like the taste better. Its more of a red/pink color as opposed to white like the albacore. I find it to be less dry as well.

Is Skipjack labeled diff? There is so much diff terms with tuna that it's confusing.

I read off a site just a few minutes ago:
Chunk light = skipjack and yellowfin
Solid = Alabacore and most mercury?

It will say right on the label. You can get flaked or chunked white, which is Albacore, or you will also see chunked light or flaked light skipjack. Something along those lines anyways. Either way, Albacore has a higher Mercury content than Skipjack. Just read the label and it will tell you if its Albacore or Skipjack.

Okay, I went to the store and picked some up. This is a little off topic, but I looked around just to see whatelse I could find. I saw calamari frozen. I've had this a long time ago and checked out the macros on it out of curiosity. Basically 100 cals, 4 oz, 18g pro, 3 carb, 1 fat, 50 sodium....but it has 250mg cholesterol? I haven't seen much foods around that have this, the macros look awesome and I'm sure it taste decent fried up. I know gear builds cholesterol and it's not good. What's ur opinion? Would it be okay to have once in a while with this much per serving Or do u think with this mg's per serving..that it's best to stay out of the way during blasts?

Everything in moderation man. A serving of that here n there isn't going to have a negative impact on cholesterol to the point where you would have to be concerned, if it even had any effect at all.

Whats ur diet usually consist off? I was just at Walmart at 1am lol, they mark chicken down like almost half off during these hours. I was so tempted to load up on the chicken, but the worker guy said they do it often anyways, so it was fine and I decided next time.

You competing sometime soon Mike?

If not, I wouldn't get too strung up about a macro here and there... keep it varied, keep it nutritious, and reward your progress with treats as you go :)

I eat whatever I want whenever I want to eat it, I eat when IM hungry and eat until Im full. I don't count macros, never have. I eat 5 meals a day these day with snacks in between. I have cheat meals daily and I don't shy away from some cookies or candies or chips if I want some. I don't binge on these items but this is life, I don't compete, I look good, so I will enjoy my time doing with without being a nerotic idiot. I eat four good meals usually beef/chicken with rice/potato/yam and some veggies, cheat meal will be pizza or burgers or some greasy bar food, theres a deadly bar right next to the gym I train at so I hit that up for high cal food post workout. My diet is not conventional and I would not recommend it to everyone but its what I do and what works for me.

I've been very stingy about diet for many years. I've eaten nothing but 'clean' foods like oats, brown rice ect... for over 2 years straight. Didn't even drink diet sodas my first year, butt after running gear I just can't do it anymore with strict diet. I'm still keeping it clean as possible, but defo moving onto the path of eating whatever. I don't mess often with fast food or candy though. I eat over 5000+ cals a day mostly clean, I just can't do it anymore tbh, it's very very tiring on the mind.

How do u guys always gain weight or make progress withOUT counting macros? How do u know that u ate enough food to grow for the day unless u passed a certain threshold, which I usually say it a decent estimate in cals? At the same time, how do u lean bulk doing this? It's hard for me to put it together.

I use the mirror to judge my progress, not the scale. I rarely step on the scale. So many guys only pay attention to the scale and are happy when theyre up 5lbs when in reality they looked better 5lbs lighter. As long as my muscle have a better quality look to them, are bigger, or Im leaner, or whatever, then Im making progressed. I was blessed with being able to eat whatever I want and however much I want of it and gain next to zero fat so thats what I do. I train my ass off in the gym, and I eat whatever I want. Of course I am aware or what Im eating. Im not gonna have a meal that all carbs. Theres always a balance but if I want to get my protein, fats, and carbs from nachos with chicken on them then thats what Im gonna do. No one that isnt a professional should be being that nerotic about what they eat that they miss out on certain things in life. Like going to the movies and NOT having popcorn because thats not ok. Give me a break. Sneek a protein shake in and you have a meal right there!!

Its BS about the mercury building up, nonsense. Best to buy fresh or frozen tuna and avoid those canned tuna like the plague. Those are just some fish that they are passing off as tuna and those are the ones that do have mercury in them.
