Var and Birth Control - Question

PatentPending

Hi.

I know this has been covered in some other posts, but I'm still a little perplexed:

I was doing a cycle of var while on birth control, I had some spotting. Here's why I was concerned. I've been on this birth control (Levora) for years, and I don't take the dummy week, so I haven't had a period in years. Seeing spotting I was concerned that the Levora has lost potency and I might be at risk for pregnancy. Luckily, my husband was deployed at the time, so no worries there, but I'm thinking of starting another cycle and want to make sure I'm safe.

There's some stuff I've been reading that taking them both is counterintuitive. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks

Search at this part of the Steroidology forum here Women's General Discussion Forum You will find plenty of threads with the same question as you. You will probably get a quicker answer, or you can use the search and find the threads and get an answer.

Thanks. I've read all those and they kind of dance around my question. That or the answers are fuzzy and unclear. Obviously, this isn't really something you want to get wrong. ;)

I've reposted in that forum, let's see if I get some bites.

Whoa don't all rush in with answers at once everyone!

I don't think anyone's avoiding your question , just most of us are not in the know regarding this type of situation. waiting for someone to step up who might know patent. wish I could help, sorry.

Var may reduce the effectiveness of birth control- sometimes it does & sometimes it doesnt.
Based on your experience, its safe to say it does so I recommend using another form of birth control, preferably two.

The real danger is var use during pregnancy so you really need to make sure no "accidents" occur.

Also, please thank bigben for pointing this thread out to me, for some reason it escaped my view :)

If anything, wouldn't Var make it harder to get pregnant? Of course, be smart and use a condom as well to be sure.

Nope.

The main interaction between var & bc pills is increased water retention but var also has a habit of doing weird things to the menstrual cycle like different spotting patterns, stopping periods altogether, etc.

Var mainly interupts the menstrual cycle, not the actions of birth control pills.
Then the question becomes can interfering with the menstrual cycle itself affect the actions of bc pills? Maybe.

I dont see an issue with staying on bc pills per se, as long as another form of contraception is also used.

Var's impact on the menstrual cycle, not the bc pills, is the issue.

I have a friend who just went on Var, she isn't on birth control, but I warned her that her periods may be affected but couldn't tell her in what way whether it would stop all together or be out of control. I was under the impression Var would act as a birth control, but I guess not!

Thanks for all the help everyone, although now I'm just really confused. There's info that says it wouldn't make the BC ineffective, and info that says it would. I get that Var effs with the menstrual cycle, so the question truly is, does it affect the mechanism of action of the birth control at all. Annoyingly, there is no concrete answer on this. I was hoping I'd get a consensus here either way, but even the opinions here are divergent.

I know, I know... still.

I guess that means you will be using condoms in the meantime. :-(
