What are your opinions on the hacksquat machine?

Do any of you use these? I used to use one a few years back, I thought they were good. They give a crazy pump in the quads. I used to put a chair next to the machine cause there was no way I could stand up after using it. Almost lost my dinner a few times too.

definitely a good machine-takes stress off the back, but tends to stress the knees a bit more
 
for all the people who say squatting is bad for you knees, my knees have never hurt squatting...except for when i tried the hacksquat machine. Don't ask my why I tried it...

It takes 45 % load off the back and takes most of the back muscle excertion out of the lift. On th other hand it takes 45% of the load applyed to your legs off as well. So by the time you add the extra weight to make up for it what did you gain? A weak back and the same load on the spine. Not to mention at least when you squat you keep your abs and back muscles tight which protects the spine. I give it two thumbs down.
 
I use it after squats...sometimes load it up with a weight I can do 20 straight reps with...really pumps blood into the quads. My feet hang off the top of the platform so my knees never pass my toes and don't have knee pain.
 
I like it for a secondary excersise once in a while. personally I have to use light weight with this and shoot for the 12-15 rep range.
 
Best thing i every did for hypertrophy in my quads by far. Nothing is even close including squat. When i did them i did 2x20. Not sure if ever got 20 on both sets though. I would follow the up withs squats in the 2x8-12 range.
 
Used to like it. Too old and beat up now. Knees wont take hack machine no more.


I prefer barbell hack squats. It's old school, it hits the quads and overall leg and scares the spandex clad wussies at the gym.

I am in the same boat as you regarding old beat up knees. Paramount Fitness Corp. makes a great hack squat machine that takes most of the strain off the knees. Now, if i could only find a gym that has one.
 
Great for higher rep sets, more of a hypertrophy movement. Ill throw them in every once in a while, usually at 15-20 reps. They do fuck with your knees though.
 
also place your feet high on the platform to take some of the pressure off the knees, use knee warmers or knee wraps if it continues to be a problem.
 
I have been using it for a few weeks now because I hurt my back a few weeks back doing convential deads. Yeah, they hurt my knees a bit, but nothing kneewraps can't really help with. I like it a lot.
