I think you are bringing up some great points and I hope this thread keeps going because I think that it will provide valuable insight to newb's like myself.
I am 31 and have always lived an active lifestyle through sports as a teen, military, working construction, and weightlifting (which about 4 years ago, I started to do smartly). I HAVE NOT DONE AAS, yet. I am still learning.
I think the people that lose ALL of their gains are the people that do not follow proper diet and have poor training practices. For example, I have a couple of friends who are the type that you are talking about. However, I know that when they are on cycle they have a tendency to test their 1rm on the bench press 2-3 times a week or any other lift for that matter. And forget about a proper PCT.
I feel that with proper training practices, diet, and PCT some gains can be kept.
