What's a good meal prior to lift session?

When you drink your oats, do you use a blender? I dont have a problem eating the oats i am used to the bland taste

Preworkout - 75grams Maltodextrin

Postworkout - 50g protein
100g Maltodextrin

I may though, add in Oatmeal preworkout, & just drink the Maltodextrin during the workout.

I don't eat the oatmeal. Drink it. It's much easier, and its faster. :insane2:

No, just get the 1 minute kind, and just shake them up in a shaker. Not bad at all. Mix them with water.

Although complex carbs are good long lasting sources. What are you using in the short term.

Liver Glycogen is the most readily available source of energy!!!

So use a carb that fills up liver glycogen - FRUIT!

Mix complex carb and fruit for the best results.
Thats what i do.

55g ON Pro-Complex (whey and egg mix)
1 cup oats
handful dried apricots (around 22g carbs). MensHealth rated apricots as the best dried fruit nutritionally, blueberries being the best frozen or fresh fruit.

I add a few raisins to my oatmeal, and occasionally I'll put some honey in with it for flavor. Since this meal is being consumed almost 2 hours before I get into the gym, I thought these complex carbs should have enough time to be converted into muscle glycogen by then. Is this thinking off?

Sorry for the back and forth bro. Think Im gonna go with your suugestion on pre/wo. How about 65 grams of protein, whey powder 40grams liquid egg whites 25 grams. Complexcarb oat's mixed in water with some fruit blueberries? How's that sound? Do I warm up the oats then put it in my shake? Thanx

I'll give you my preworkout regimen:

8 oz. Chicken Breast
1 cup Brown Rice
1 med Granny Smith Apple

How much of each is going to depend on your size and the makeup of the rest of your diet:

Blueberries are a good choice, along with strawberreis, or granny smith apples.

You don't have to warm the oats up - you can drink them straight if you want, and i've known several people to go this route.

Just had a pre workout shake today before squats. It was 40 grams of whey, 1 cup oats, 1 white grapefruit mixed in water. It helped keep energy threw out the workout but I felt bloated as hell and it actually made me weaker cause I couldn't flex my serratus cause it felt like I was carryin a keg around in my gut. Ill probably need to drink it then wait longer to go. I drank it then went straight to the gym.

I usually eat some trail mix (mixed nuts, raisins, few M&Ms) about 1 hour before i go to the gym. Then I drink a dextrose-whey shake 10-20 min before i get to the gym. 4 to 1 carbs to protein. Postworkout 3 to 1. I can tell a difference in size, energy, and I am staying very lean.

I have taken your advice & I like what I see: More energy, more focus, and my workouts are supurb.

I eat 1-1 1/2 cups oatmeal & 1 granny smith apple before I hit the gym. By the time I'm working out, its been at least 15 minutes.

Be careful on leg night though. I almost puked my guts out. I'm a little intense on legs. They are my bitches.

No shit. I drank a a shake 1 cup raw oats blended with grapefruit and 50 grams of whey went straight to the gym hit squats. I was walkin around like a tub a lug it was embarrasing I was so bloated I was wabbling. Yesterday I drank the same shake 1 hour before instead of 15 min. it was chest day. I also downed a 2 shot espresso and exploded on decline bench loved it. Trick is too wait at least for my system everyones metabolism is different.

Glad its helping -

I have to wait longer on leg day as well.

Also, I do abs 4x a week, & it kind of upsets my stomach when I'm doing them. I think I will give myself 30 minutes before I start training now. I think that will be ample time to allow myself some digestion.

it takese an hour to digest my pre-workout. Im makin it with a carton of egg whites 50 grams pro, 1 cup oats, 1 piece fruit mix with water.

I recommend eating at least 1 1/2 hours before -

I completely missed the part where he stated he was working out 15 min later. Thats a no no give yourself time.

hate to go against the grain here guys but i fry up bacon before i train. best workouts ive ever had came from eating fried bacon. carbs just bloat me.

Carb's do bloat ya but it's your energy source. Im gonna try waiting 1 and half hours see if thats better.

Dirk, what's a good ratio of carb to protein pre-workout?

I've been taking a 2:1 carb-protein ratio and it seems pretty good, is that a little high on carbs or within a good range?
