Im 5'11, and I use a sumo stance.. I try to dead with a shoulder width stance, but my knees do this weird buckle ing thing towards the top of the motion.. like they butterfly out slightly right before I reach the top.

6' I use shoulder width. If your knees are buckling out ward at the top of the lift try pointing your toes our slightly.

I use shoulder width on deads when performing this exercise as well.Saturn what does pointing your toes outward do to correct Buddys problem?I remember when I started doing deads in my younger years that I was loading the bar way to heavy, and it was compromising my form.Hence the knees buckling .Work on your form first and formost then load up the bar bro.
I,m not questioning your statement Saturn ,I would like to know for myself if it could help me pull more weight when I plan my next bulking cycle come fall .

I'm 6ft 2 and use a shoulder width stance. I have long arms and I just feel unconfortable in a sumo stance. Besides I don't get my shins scratched as often and those are the bodybuilders "badges of honour" when he/she deadlifts.

i use hsolder width coz i find sumo difficult. Doe's anyone know how much of a difference it makes? many different muscles worked?

sumo emphasises more hip and less back than conventional

im 5'10 and i use shoulder width. have never even tried sumo. i agree with getting your form down first before loading the weight. you can really screw yourself up good if you strain your back from improper form.

so if sumo's concentrate on the hips then why do them? wouildn't it just be unessasary strain? and the point of a deadlift is to work the back and lower back isn't it?

I do both. I am 5'8.

I have a strange body though. My legs are short, my arms appear short because my ribcage is so big. Also, I am flat footed and have a natural tendency to turn my feet out.. such as when i walk or stand.. my feet never face straight. When I try to straighten my stance for squatting or dl my feet will wander out to the sides. When this happens the movement is altered.

Currently I am using standard as the foundation of my Deadlifting routine. But when I max I use sumo as it is a more natural position for me and I feel that there is less risk of injury. The only difference I feel is that when I use standard my traps tend to be much more sore than when i use sumo.

Big Ditto to Club Foot.

Sumo is a much more natural stance for me, and the commentary on his bone structure is similar to mine. I have shorter legs, long ish arms, short rib cage, but long abdomen.

I can go heavier with sumo, and it feels more natural, whereas shoulder width feels a lil disjointed, and I feel myself really concsious of my form

I also have short arms and legs, a long torso, and feet that naturally point out. They're not flatfooted, though, I have a high instep. Getting the foot angle right for deads and squats is tricky for me, if I try to straighten my stance my knees will buckle. The feet are also an issue when doing cardio, 'cause my running shoes wear funny. Most shoes are made for over-pronators, I need under-pronator shoes and they're hard to find.

I've never tried Sumo deads, the conventional shoulder-width, over 'n under grip feels perfectly natural to me.
