why is it hard to "touch" in a shirt?

ive never used a shirt before, so im a bit confused when i hear someone say XXX lbs. wouldnt touch. is this technique, or is the shirt too tight? is a shirt so resistant that it would take a certain amount of weight to get the bar down on your chest?

so if I'm maxing ~350lbs raw, I could conceivably put up over 400lbs with the aid of a shirt? Im really interested in competing sometime next year. If i could ever find a meet in my area. (RI)

Well it's not that easy for everyone, to just put on the shirt and add 50lbs.

Some find the groove soner and some have a hard time adding a single pound in the beginning. The soner you start the more time you have to getting used to the shirt and can adjust your technique.

tightness of the shirt wil make a hiuge difference
that also includes if you gain/lose weight

it is largely technique and upper end strength..what you will find with a tight shirt is that most likely your lockout strength (where the shirt stops and you take over) will never be enough..that can be anywhere from just off the chest and on up..

pulling the neck of th shirt down wil also give a lot of support so it willtake more weight in order to touch your belly/chest..

some catch on quick and others it takes time..having someone experienced to help is worth a ton

It's all in technique and the kind of shirt you are using. I know of a high school kid that has a great bench at 18 years old. He is benching 275lbs at 145lbs. When he first started using the shirt, he only added about 25lbs to the bench, but within three months of using it, was hitting right around 330lbs.

BTW, that same kid was benching 235lbs at a weight of 125lbs. He was a wrestler too and cleaned house on the mat.

If you pick up a relatively tight single ply and a militia video, and have someone here who is good with shirts like Pullingbig critique you, you should be able to pull it off. I am working in a rage x now, and would not have been able to work it properly without the constant coaching i have now. blackbeard is a freak, and has gotten much farther than i did on his own.

can anyone reccomend a decent shirt for a beggining shirt user?

This is my unproffesional opinion, from the info i received from people when i was purchasing my first shirt. For 85 bucks you can get a titan F6 or Fury, the Fury is good if you plan on benching elbows out. The F6 is for the guys with a nice arch or who tuck and hit it low, or preferably both. Supposedly the F6 has a similar, yet less unforgiving groove as denim, so if you plan on moving to denim in the future it may be similar. Most of the new big time shirts from inzer as well have a low groove but are a little more expensive. Titan also has a great warranty. I am using a inzer Rage x two ply right now though. I have an F6, and was in it once and hit a nice number in it, it was also much easier to touch in than my double ply, i would stick with one ply if i were you, and benching in a commercial gym. I would also pick up a MM video, Blackbeard can probaly help you out with that, and i am sure Pullingbig and Dadawg will have a more experienced opinion than mine.

I ran the single ply Titan Fury, slightly oversized for training (about 1.5" at the time).

I strongly suggest getting the DVD, I read what I could but the DVD is what clinched getting the basics down into wearing and working with the shirt. Took about 5 weeks to break it in, and I was touching with weights at that time, I could even touch with 3 plates.

Now I have no training partner, so no more shirted work. :(

If I get around to using one again, I would probably buy the F6 and try that. I still have my Fury in the closet though.

get the "Advanced Bench Press" dvd
check over on ebay first since sebastian sells a lot of stuff form time to time at like half off

sounds like good advice to me . titans for 85$ are hard to beat for learning purposes .
