CSULA student hospitalized after allergic reaction to friend's medication | abc7.com

So I wanted to share this story with you guys because you all understand the body a little more than normal people. This is just trippy. This girl who got burned was an old friend of mine. This incident happened a few months ago but I just heard it recently. She basically took an antibiotic from a friend and had an allergic reaction that burned her entire body as if she got engulfed by a fire.

It's so insane because she used to be a pretty girl, now she looks way different.

Wow, that's really heart breaking. I had never heard of that syndrome before, but was aware of allergic reactions to certain antibiotics like sulfas causing really bad problems. As this is a little old, do you know if she recovered okay?

Edit: Wow, there's quite the list of typical drugs (hah! Sulfas are one) that can induce this reaction, where essentially the skin peels away on the inside, and dies.

Wikipedia said:
SJS may be caused by adverse effects of the drugs vancomycin, allopurinol, valproate, levofloxacin, diclofenac, etravirine, isotretinoin, fluconazole,[12] valdecoxib, sitagliptin, oseltamivir, penicillins, barbiturates, sulfonamides, phenytoin, azithromycin, oxcarbazepine, zonisamide, modafinil,[13] lamotrigine, nevirapine, pyrimethamine, ibuprofen,[14] ethosuximide, carbamazepine, bupropion, telaprevir,[15][16] and nystatin.[17][18]

She is ok now............as in she is going to live. But her face needs major plastic surgery to ever look somewhat normal again which her family has no money for

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I'll read the story. I hope she makes a good recovery.

I had a Steven Johnson Syndrome / Toxic Epidermal Necrolyis (SJS/TEN) reaction to Contrast Media/Iodine. I had I.R. surgery for my varicocele and a few other tests with Contrast for sports injuries.

My first few exposurs I had the warm feeling on my thighs, feet, armpits. My final exposure way worse with a hot burning sensation of Athlete's Foot times 10. I actually pulled into my old Community College and used the showers (on cold) to try to get relief. Shortly after my skin was trashed. I lost multiple layers of skin on my feet, groin, and G.I. system. Once the skin started sloughing off it was really gross/weird/uncomfortable.

I was lucky. My feet healed well and my G.I. sloughing didn't cause any permanent damage. If the reaction had been to other tissue like ocular tissue (which is common) or lung tissue; I'd be blind and likely dead too.

A girl in Saratoga, CA had SJS a decade or so back and lived for a year with the damage before succumbing to her injuries. It's really a fucking scary thing.

But what's scary is that the common drugs like Ibuprofen, Pen G. and sulfa drugs can all cause it. Of course it's rare, but it still happens. I have a warning on every medical record about contrast media. I should wear a medical alert.

Come to think of it I wonder if iodine is ever in gear? I'll ask Megatron.

No, they would never put iodine in gear. The pain (even for those without SJS) would be insane to say the least!
