I don't want it to sound like I'm saying it's not a big accomplishment and I realize it is necessary at some level but I think that should be at the elite level.
jcp2 said:I will give my opinion, i don't think it helps build muscle, or any muscle that a bodybuilder would care about. But it is extremely difficult and technical to use. Almost rediculously technical, and it si a alot of hard work. I also think injuries are probably more likely in a bench shirt, but that is just an opinion, you are probably not as likely though to tear a pec. Just some observations by me.

WHy? There is a shirted all time record and a raw all time world record. Oddly the same guy holds them both.......
I think they have their place but when mendelson couldn't touch with I think it was 1035 and he was opulling down with all his might, something is not right.
I think you don't understand what pulling the weight in means. It's not really like that. YOu actually couldn't feasably pull towrd you with al your might in his style shirt. ALso keep in mind mendy doesn't have the best form. He really doesn't. He does however have brute strength. Good form makes it easier to touch along with good flexibility.
That means that at the bottom that shirt was holding over 1000 lbs.
NO, it doesn't. WHat do you think is holding the shirt? yOu cna't imagine the shear force and presure a shirt puts on you. YOu need to fight this force from flattening you out for starters.
Not saying he doesnt have to do any work just saying that a raw bench means a lot more to me.
THere are federations for 100% raw powerlifting ans there are assited competitions. Just like there are drug free and open divisions. IF you compete in a assisted division you realy shouldn't give two cents ewhat your raw bench is since platform lifting is all that matters and you will be wearing a shirt on the platform.
For instance Rocco I know guys that could outbench you by 100 or more lbs raw but you would win a comp over them.
#1 I highly doubt you know too many guys that bench 535 or more raw. #2 I wouldn't win a competition over them if it were a raw sanctioning body. IF they competed APF which is assisted, assumin they had the ability to train a 535 or more raw bench they would certainly smash me to bits at an assisted competition.
lilboy2 said:PB !!! you know what kills me about you... instead of educating everyone on what exactly IS a bench shirt and what the uses of it are... you just make wise remarks on how it is that everyone is WAYYYY off ...
so either you lack the capabilities to explain it thoroughly ... or you just like being condescending.
Now I’m 98% sure that this is going to get me banned YET AGAIN! ,, but really. PB for a mod that pretends to know it all,, you sure don’t like to educate the masses.
Actually my friend Phil used to do 515 raw every week after hitting 315 for 20 and then 405 for 10. My friend Pauly who trained him had a 550 bench raw I believe. I almost didn't post in this thread because I don't want it to seem like I don't resepect you guys and what you do and how ahrd it is and how hard you work. I also know all the stuff you were saying and I understand shirted benching is an art and it is very hard. I also know Mendelson holds both records he is a freak lol. I also saw the video where Mendelson couldn't touch and from people that were there they said he was trying to row the weight so it would touch. I don't care about form if you can't make over 1000 lbs touch your chest something is wrong. And I also said earlier I think they are necessary but I think they should only be used at elite levels. There are a lot of people that agree with me I'm sure. Just like a kid who weighs 175 doesnt need steroids, a guy that benches 315 doesn't need a shirt. I think you should raise a raw bench first then use the shirt for assistance to take it to the next level.roccodart440 said:Oh and #3 I am a platform lifter. That's were I hit my PR's. You don't see me hitting my biggest lifts in the gym I always hit more on the platform and then I post the vids to proove it. I don't train to lift raw. If I was going to go to a raw competion I would be well trained and prepared and I would raw bench far more than I do now.

I definitely agree with this and like I said I think it NEEDS to be used but I think it should be limited to elite level atheletes.jcp2 said:Well everyone that has your opinions and thinks it should be such, when you start your own fed you can make your own rules, but the APF seems to be growing year over year, where the USAPL seems to not be, and the IPF seems to be alienating itself time and time again, they just banned one of their best lifters ever. Equipment is fine, and whatever you want to wear is fine, as long as it is legal in the fed you choose.

Also are you part of Team Sniffy?
silver_shadow said:typically shirted benching requires a much wider grip and bringing the bar down lower on the torso.
Jusee said:Basically it sounds like weather you can take full advantage of the shirt or not, it still helps you lift more.

Mudge said:If you do not train for the shirt, benefit will be very little. One of the premier raw benchers Glen Chabot (retired for a couple years), only got about 30 pounds out of a double poly shirt. I only got about 25 out of my single when I started training in it, if you dont have the triceps for the remainder of the press after the initial shot off of the chest then you aren't going to get much of anything out of it at all.
For a guy like Glen who benched around 700 raw (for arguments sake), getting 30 out of a shirt isn't much to write about. With this in mind naturally he bragged about his raw bench, not his shirted.
