Allways Use A Spotter [ Link ]

yea a buddy at work told me about that..sad stuff, and that was my reply..it wont do it without a spot, it only takes a split second for a accident to happen

I feel bad for kids to come home and find Dad dead on the bench with 250lbs of weight crushing his neck.

Damn, dadawg, you're like my mom. Now I'm scared to bench . . . .

I think if you are just not working out alone, even in a gym of people, you'd be fine. Most spotters are not prepared to touch the bar at 275, so the initial blow is a freak thing. But anyone could have got it off his neck . . .

My friend from school told me his uncle died the other day, his wife found him in the garage with the bar across his neck, they found out his arm/shoulder popped out of place and the weight fell crushing his neck killing him instantly. He always used really light weight <125lbs he didn't care about strength he lifted to stay in shape. I think he was around 35 years old. So even if you are just doing a quick light set if something happens someone needs to be there.

I never bench heavy without a spot. I'm just too nervous about injury to really push myself hard enough without a spot.

Safety Stands

Yeah, being from Pittsburgh we having been truly mourning this all this last week. For a football player that isn't much weight, I bet that was just a light workout set for him. I don't go heavy either when I am by myself, but as this and a few have pointed out, it is still truly dangerios if anything else goes wrong. I think we forget how freaking strong even the weakest of dudes on the juice are.

I actually built some adjustable safety stands for benching particularly, but I can use them for squatting.... not fullproof, but they would have saved me in this scenario for sure, I should use them every time I bench. Only drawback is you can only drop to 1 - 2" off your chest.

Made them 19" x 5" out of 2x6, interlocking stackable, with one made from 2x3 to get the 3" height resolution.

Man Rob, as a side here, that is one incredible avitar, love to hear the story behind that one.
