i've had a bad knee (left) for a little under a year now. it's always been weak, but after training to fight within the past year i've had it pop out of location a few times (knee cap) due to being kicked and other things....

sports med guy told me NO squats or leg ext. EVER again....
haven't seen an orthopedic sugeon, but the dr. said it's stretched/ruptured connective tissues around/under/ontop of my knee cap....

well....what should i do for legs?
i ride my bike a lot and have been doing leg press, leg curls and a couple calf machines...

any help greatly appreacieted
thanks.

I can understand no extensions, but as for squats you should wrap always and listen to your body. If it doesn't feel right don't do them.

Leg press is an option, but stay away from the hack squat machine.

im not a sports med expert but if you dont strengthen those muscles to support the knee joint you will be more likely to have a seperation again . get a 2nd opinion and really explain what you do to the guy .

Its hard to believe never again. Surgury? Strengthing? Therapy? How did you mess up you knee so bad? You said it has always been weak. Since birth?

surgery isn't an option right now cuz rehab and recovery would take too long....
i messed it up getting kicked in the leg repeatedly, and it's just been weak for whatever reason my whole life.
i'm gonna go see an ortho on my day off to see if i can get myself an MRI.

I vaguely recall reading that leg extensions are very hard on the knees because they cause the muscles to contract in that area just ever so slightly out of synch, causing knee problems for some. Dunno.

Stationary bike is real good. Hopefully you just stretched out the ligs around your knee. Try contrast baths to flush it out to expedite the healing process (2-3 minutes ice water as in ice with a splash of water, and then immediately submerge into hot as you can take water and slowly begin to rotate your leg. Don't move it whilst in the cold. Do this as many times as you like, usually I just do it until the water gets lukewarm and isnt effective anymore.). I've had a lot of success healing stuff with contrast baths.

and this does exactly what? reduce the swelling? i have a bad left knee as well, slight tear on the inside tendon that connects the femur with the fibula via the knee. its only been about 5 weeks.the swelling is making the rest of the knee sore. it would be nice to have some technique to reduce the swelling.

The contrast will basically "flush" the injury. Out with the bad shit thats sitting in there and in with the good. Some people move their hand will in the hot and cold water but I wouldnt advise it because theres a chance you could reinjure it. Contrast baths would definately help your knee though. Its just tough to find the equipment to submerge larger body parts like a whole leg.

For something like a knee I'd recommend maybe buying two cheap hampers/garbage cans from walmart and using those as your pails for hot and cold, not sure how tall you are as to whether it'd work 100%. Grab a few bags of ice and fill it up 3/4 with ice and fill the other with water as hot as you can stand. The garbage cans won't give you a lot of ROM when doing the hot portion but at least you'll be able to submerge it totally.

Also once done try to put some sort of compression sleeve over yoru knee, even an ace wrap wrapped tightly around your knee to keep the fluid/swelling from building up so much in the area.

I've done contrast baths with several injuries and after I'm done I feel awesome with that + Motrin IB. Also if you're able to get ahold of electro stim massage at a local college training room or the likes that works awesome too, I had the luxury of stim for a lot of shit and loved it.
