first off whats the diff between the two....and second my chin/pull ups sux........i can barely do 1 0r 2 of these........for a set .....pretty pathetic i know....but i have a very hard time doing wide back excersises, close grip back exercises i can perform quite well ........but i want to improve my chin/pull ups so what should i do just keep doin them till i finally hit more or are there other excercises i can do that will improve this excercise?my back routine right now is:

(just started my 5x5 routine and have never done deads b4 )
deads 5x5 w/95lbs
chins 2x8-10( well that stwhat id like it to be...but its actually like 2-1)
rows 2x8-10 w/110lvs

or is there another exercise i can perform in place of chins that are almost as effective( i say almost cause i see in most posts that i have read that u guys truely love this excercise)

When I first started chin ups I could barely do 2 or 3 also. Not sure if they have a machine at your gym that can assist you. But I did those until they got really easy then started doing them on thier own, now I can do like 15 in one set easily. Your 205 so they could make it a little difficult, the heavier you are the harder they are.

I was the same way when I first started pullups. Now I do then with weight. Do them 3 times a week do as many as you can.

wait till u boys hit the 250lbs + weight barrier...its litterally impossible to do the shit....i can do like 2-3 sets of 6-8 reps....but thanks to lat pulldowns and weight assisted pullup machines

so what i see so far is stick it out and just keep doning till i break into higher reps.....ok ...but now whats the diff between chins and pull ups??

That's a sorry excuse for not doing pullups or chinups. 250 lbs is NOT very heavy at all, and if you can't do chinups and pullups then you're weak. I'm not even strong and I can do sets of 6 with over 60 extra pounds at 200 lbs bwt. And if you're 250 lbs of muscle, then you should be able to do chins easily - unless you're weak.

Chins: Palms facing you

Pullups: Palms facing away from you

frostry being rough today.

i dont do pull ups but the other day just for kicks i tried. i wasnt expecting much at 310lbs. but i surprised myself as i hit 10 before i gave out. i did these with a very wide grip. i was the most surpised guy in the gym. i guess all the heavy back work over the years made the difference.

Impressive PB. At 275 I can only get 6 or so wide grip pullups. Chins I can do sets no prob. Rack chins helped a shitload in getting there...

ok so i should have my palms facing me to do chins.......only one ? with this wont ur bi's be greatly involved??? hey thanks frosty for clearing it up what they are.. also what is a rack chin??? i seen guys talkin bout in another forum but when i tried to pull up the pic they posted, it wouldnt let me...also 1 more thing ( i promise) what is a good alternative or exchange exercise for chins???i want to stick them out till i can do more but i wanna know what else i can do to improve my chins......

frosty, I aint weak...im just stating that when u start putting on mass rapidly, its hard to keep up on the reps.

You should actually keep ur mouth shut and quit putting ppl down for what they can do and what they cannot do....Im imagining ur just a mentally weak person who gets off putting ppl down because u think u know it all. Guess what? Shut up and listen to ppl rather than constanting shooting the mouth.

Im done with this thread.

Im done with this thread.

If you rapidly put on weight, then there are three options:

1. You were lifting heavy and you gained muscle. In this case the new muscle should be functional.

2. You did 10x10 and put on a lot of mass without getting much stronger.

3. You got fat.

If you did number one, you shouldn't have a problem of keeping up the reps.

If you did number two, then you're weak.

If you did number three, then you just got fat.

Of course there are combos of 1 and 3 and 2 and 3, but I think you get the idea.

this thread brought the fire out in frosty.

hows the SM training coming bro. you getting psyched yet? how many weeks out are you?

You know frosty, i was going to stay out of this, but there are people who just dont do chinups or pullups. FIrst off, who fucking cares if one cannot or finds chinups hard to do? I sure as hell dont. Nor should you. Sure, you may think chinups and pullups are the greatest fucking thing on earth. Id rather do Deads, Bent over BB rows and so forth rather than sit my ass under a bar and do endless reps like you probably do.

Secondly off, How the hell do you can presume three things of results for the reason why i find pullups hard. I just do. so who the fuck cares, I sure dont, so why the fuck should you?
Lastly off...You want to say that if i put on mass and am weak? I dont think so! Theres no fucking way to get bigger without getting stronger. Ive never seen them publish anything about the true mass monsters doing chinups in BBing or PLing. I may be wrong, but from what ive ever read, there are none.

BOTTOM LINE....YOU CANNOT BE 310LBS OF MOSTLY SOLID MUSCLE AND BE WEAK!!!

Shoot, I don't even know. There is no set date yet

Hamstring strength is up...conditioning is up. Gotta schedule a weekend to get together with my buddy and get used to the tire and log. Gotta do more grip work.

Im gonna stand up and say weighted pull-ups/chins do NOT help all that much with back width or thickness. Ive discussed this with some ppl who compete, and the consensus is this...deads/barbell rows/pullovers/lat pulldowns are the way to go. Ive exhausted weighted chins....all they do is make you a stronger wieghted chin puller-upper.

And frosty, comparing yourself to others for the sole purpose of either (since you like to list shit)
1. You want to make them look bad
2. You want to make yourself look good
3. Combination of both

Ever be in a conversation and have someone just jump in, put you down, then compare themselves favorably to you? Its disgusting. So ill do the same and tell me if its cool. Frosty...at that weight your actually quite weak with pullups. Ive pulled +95lbs for 4 reps before I realized it wasnt making a difference in my back.

Pullinbig doesn't do chinups and he cranked out 10 at 310 lbs.

If you're 310 lbs of solid muscle and can't do chinups - face it, you're weak. I can do a 1RM for chinups with 330 lbs total weight. I also did sets of 3 with 310 lbs total weight. Guess what? I'm weak! Ask Pullinbig. So if you're 310 lbs and can't do any chinups, then you're extremely weak for your size. Unless you have some problem with your shoulder mechanics that prevent you from doing them or something.

dude...u gotta get this...when one does not do pullups ever....it is harder than for someone who does pullups or whatever religiously.
