i go to a fitness club..and their dumbells/and weights are rubber weights..no biggie

tonight i went with one of my buddies to his gym..and they are the real deal old school weights

the thing is..i always do a set of 10 of 50lbs dumbells to warm up *chest* ....i go in there tonight, did them, no biggie, they were a little tougher than usual, but nothing special

then i auto go to my 75 to do my first 10...OHHH HELLLLLL NO i was struggling like a champ....

whats the deal with those?

all in all though...it really did seem harder...like i said i can usually top out at 110's on bench flats and i could barly finish up with my 90's..couldnt get threw the sets....but who knows

just didnt know if there was an explaination or anybody else had this happen..like i said..i thought weights or weights.....

could be a conspiracy...a bunch of older people workout at the gym..the weights could be under weighted to make them geezers feel good about themselves?!?!?! hmmmmm one might never know

Rusty weights are heavier a lot of times. Also, (my gym has old, old weights too) the older equipment wasn't weighted properly and the 45lbs plates are really 48lbs sometimes. This really sucks because sometimes I know after benching a couple of reps, that one side is heavier than the other and that I need to replace one of the "45's".

It might be the size of the db's themselves. The weight is no different but maybe the size of them is--causing you to keep the weight more balanced. I can't explain what I mean very well. Sorry. :)

You know how sometimes when you drive a different car than you usually do, and it takes you a while to get used to it. I've noticed it's the same way with weights. It may just seem more difficult because the weights are different than what you are used to.

i find this with barbells. there are these ones that are of gunmetal like apperence and they seem hevier then the reaguler ones. maybe its in my head but i never use the things.

Didn't you also say that you've taken some time off? That could be the problem right there.

But there definitely is some mental aspect to it. I used to work out with the "real weights" a you call them, before I moved out here for school, and I maxed at 90's for 7 reps on flat bench DB press. First workout here, "rubber weights" I managed to squeeze out 4 reps of the 100's. All in the head.

I to do not like the rubber dumbbells. For one thing they are much larger which makes it harder to contract your muscle on pressing movements cause you cant bring them as close together. Also i don't feel like they weigh the same, In the head doubtful. When i can use the 70's for dumbbell curls (rubber) and 60's (metal) with about the same reps that isn't the same.

The mind is a very, very powerful force. It COULD be a mental aspect throwing you on the difference between metal and rubber. Hell, if I'm turned at the wrong angle to the ceiling on bench press it screws with my lift. 90% mental, 10% physical.

Sometimes for me the bench differences cause an issue, also when I am regular at a certain gym it becomes like my home, and I am more "at home" when I'm home than at some other place. So when I'm in the groove at home, I'm ripping shyt up.
