hey guys i am thinking of making a small home gym inside my one car garage. I would like to have good all around free weights cage and two cardio machines i wonder if i have enough space! does anyone know any good equipment to buy for a relatively small space?

Get a nice solid bench, not one of those cheap walmart specials. Get a ton of weights, some adjustable dumbbells and you are pretty much set for basic stuff. It would be nice to get a bench that can double as a squat rack. Also, if you get bored, you can build a dip station and maybe a bar for chins.

That's a smith machine with a whole bunch of stuff added to it.

I agree with pullinbig, but he's the guru anyway. A bench, a powerrack. You can get a 300 lb Olypmic bar and free weights locally probably for maybe $100-$110.

I used to be a bigger advocate of the home gym than I am now. It is certainly do-able, but I'm just not as big 'a fan. A good gym has some great benefits for the serious lifter. And if you are gonna lift, then you might as well be serious about it.

a power rack and a bench is all you need along with some weights. add some bands for variety and you good to go. all this can be done for under 1000 bucks.

i own a bench and tons of weights. i also own a bowflex. havent touched the dead weights since ive gotten the bowflex. its an amazing machine and ive gotten great results from it.

Uh... I think most people are going to tell you that free weights are better than the bowflex. From what I have read (not from personal experience, so it may be wrong) the poundages the bowflex uses aren't even accurate. What is supposed to be 50 pounds actually ends up being 42.75 or something like that.
I've also known a few guys who say they can do 300 lbs on certain exercises using the bowflex, but when they try to use real weights, they have to cut the weigh in half or worse.

If it's getting you good results, then great. But don't sell your weights. I think you'll need them eventually.

i messed with a box flex a few times. it works for some of the smaller guys. however i cant use it cause there is not enough resistance. it is however better than not doing anything. its similar to using bands.

my buddy has one paid 2000 dollars for it and it now collects dust.it is shit in my opinon.it's got a bunch of shit to flip and flop around just get the power rack a bar and bench a good set of weights.

a bowflex.
i have my own home gym in my garage.it is a double but all my stuff would fit in a single because it used to be in one.i have a power rack with a lat atachment and chin bar just like the newyork bb one, over 1000#'s of free weight, two 7'bars,5'bar,ez curl bar, adjustable bench flat, decline, incline, dumbells from 25#'s to 115#'s,and a stairstepper.now you could do with just the rack, bars, bench, plates and the stairstepper or treadmill.it can be done relatively cheap.just add a little at a time.the rack on ny bb is a good inexpensive rack and a must!

hey pullinbig i love your advise as well as mranack but i really need something that comes with all parts included! can you please give me a direct link and a small list of the exercises i can do with it. I do want to lift seriously but i mostly want a nice physic... i dont want to be ashamed when taking my shirt off! i was looking at this powerrack and i was hoping on your thoughts about it. And joining a gym really isnt an option with school, work, and a needy gf not much time is left. actually i have 3 days tue, wed, thurs and about 2 hours to kill!

you can squat, pull deads, bench, do militaries, bent over rows, curls, tri work, gms, zerchers, dimels, all kinda rack work, etcccccccc with just a bench, a power rack and weights. add some bands to that and the list is endless.

its all you need for starters. and 3 days a week for 2 hours is plenty of time to train.
