Insulin use - anyone use a Blood Glucose Monitor?

Anyone suggest any specific BGM? Also, what exactly are some steps I'd want to go about using the BGM for our purpose? I've tried searching various forums, seems a few people mention taking this measure, but haven't found anything related to the use of them.

I'd be really surprised if anyone started taking insulin without one...you would have to have a death wish or totally over eat carbs to cover yourself...sure after a few months of practice and nailing your post injection meals you could relax a little but I'd always have a BGM handy just incase.

Walmart brand stuff is dirt cheap. I swear I saw some even cheaper ones at CVS, but I didn't stop to investigate. The key to picking a meter is to look at the strips that it uses. The strips range from 9 bucks to over 100 a tube.

You will also need lancets and if you want to do it by the book (I don't because I use the meter 6 times a day and it becomes a pain), pick up a box of alcohol swabs. I also recommend grabbing a larger lancet device if you have larger hands. Meters come with one, but they're usually only about two inches in length, and are easy to drop.

Before you swab the finger tip, I also recommend squeezing at the base of the finger and pulling towards the end. This draws more blood to the tip, making it easier to get a good drop of blood without having to crush your finger in the process.

A friend who no longer uses his lent it to me when I first started playing around with slin. Honestly it wasn't as useful as I expected...years of being pretty scrawny have me pretty in tune with the pre-hypo and hypo feelings so all the monitor did was confirm my suspicions.

One thing I will say, even though I would say I'm pretty close to dialed with regards to my protocol, I still wear a diabetic medicalert bracelet at the gym and keep hard candy/fruit snacks in my pockets, along with my intraWO dextrose/BCAA drink and postWO isolate. I would highly recommend something of the sort especially if you are just starting out.
