Walmart brand stuff is dirt cheap. I swear I saw some even cheaper ones at CVS, but I didn't stop to investigate. The key to picking a meter is to look at the strips that it uses. The strips range from 9 bucks to over 100 a tube.
You will also need lancets and if you want to do it by the book (I don't because I use the meter 6 times a day and it becomes a pain), pick up a box of alcohol swabs. I also recommend grabbing a larger lancet device if you have larger hands. Meters come with one, but they're usually only about two inches in length, and are easy to drop.
Before you swab the finger tip, I also recommend squeezing at the base of the finger and pulling towards the end. This draws more blood to the tip, making it easier to get a good drop of blood without having to crush your finger in the process.
