Lowerback injury help needed...

Have had nagging back issues for a few years but was told it was sciatica and that I had mild lordosis. A few months back I made a decsion to stop the power movements had an mri done and to cut a long story short the conclusions was as follows:

"There are disc bulges in the lower lumbar spin resulting in near encroachment on the l4 and l5 nerve roots. There are bilateral inter-articularis defects at the l5/s1 level resulting
in a grade 1 anterolisthesis"

Physio recommends that I dont deadlift or do weighted squats or any movement that put's me out bentover row's. Been doin pelvic floor, Ab, Foam roller work etc

Been following the advice and The only real benefit of all this is that I haven't aggravated my sciatic nerve to the point that it leaves me in bed for a day or two which usually happens bout twice a year.

But other than that have lost a lot of strength, core stability, and im still getting the usual pain. Very frustrating I'm considering going back to my old ways of training...

Anyone have similar issues and how you dealt with it??
Any advice at all for that matter would be great.

bad backs are a pain in the ass, the tough part is that you never know when it is going to flare up and start bothering you...it seems like you are doing the right things to me, I wouldn't push it too much.

have had lower back issues for years, with a bulged disc at L4. Its no fun. I really hurt in a few years ago and I started to look after my back better at that point. I started by acupuncture. I purchased an inversion table. These things helped me treat my issues as the began rather than deal with them once I was a mess. I started working with the exercise ball in the gym to strengthen my core. I started doing light free squats with about 75 lbs weight and I did them all the time.

Next on my list is some weight loss. All these things though have made my back feel better than it has in 10 years. I look after it though to now. I don't push it to far and i recognize what will hurt me before I even do it. I don't force things and I work smarter.

I had a Dr tell me you have to work through it. The more you rest it the weaker it becomes. I rest it when i hurt it and when I can get up and do something I do. I gently push through the pain.

I read your post you are really facing a very dangerous problem. You should consult with the good doctor at immediately basis and I hope he will give you the best solution to get rid from this problem.

Had same problem four years ago. Ruptuered disc between l4 and l5. I had surgery on it. I recovered and I'm back doing heavy squats and reads. Just got to watch your form always now. Dec talk to your doctor. Be careful and good luck.

Back pain sucks, mine was caused by bad posture, I'm sitting down for at least 12 hours daily, I was leaning my body to one side, this was causing me back problems that at times it wouldn't even let me walk for days, the only thing that seem to help was a pain reliever ( Diclofenac ). Good luck.

Take care of your back! It's the #1 cause of guys having to stop lifting all together that I've seen through the years.

I was laid up all weekend popping Lortabs like tic tacs thinking it may have been sciatica, luckily it turned out to be twisted muscles.

Seriously listen to the doctors, I have many old buddies that had to give the gym up all together from back issues.

I was snowboarding last year for the first time when I took a bad fall. My upper half of my torso got caught on a drift, my lower half was attacked to the board and could not rotate. Result? Me turning damn near 180 degrees on my spine.

I did not go to the ER(useless pricks). But after a week of intense pain, went to a chiropractor who did X-rays. He declared I had sprained my spinal cord and turned the damn thing into an S shape lol.

Almost a year later now, and after an intense first few months of 3x a week, then 2x, then every 2 weeks, etc. I now see the Chiropractor once a month for an adjustment and am generally pain free.

I also took the fluffy crap off my bed and put a sleeping bag under my bedsheets. Why? Firmness, I prefer to lay on my back now and let it rest.

As with the keeping it in shape, this is important as hell. I got hurt because I believe I was too weak muscle wise. And the best months since then come after I push and workout with it. Still need another round of X-rays though to see if its 100% straight again lol.

That being said, I was reading in his office on how they can treat bulging discs and stuff now via other routes other than surgery. Such as decompression to try and cause it to suck back into place and other weird things.

I will say this, a Chiropractor earned my respect. Back is 99% better, and I think the only reason it does still get bothered is bad posture and the fact I am always conscious of it so my mind over perceives.

Deadlifts and squats, I love squats, but deadlifts I honestly(not to be a pussy) Try to avoid. I am in this for fitness, and to be in great shape. But I know my body needs to last.

I do not doubt with current medical advancements that in 10 years spinal treatments will be crazy superior to what we can do today, but I would rather not find out firsthand.
