Mentzer's diet journal 6 weeks out from the O.

He self published his pre contest journal, which included his workouts, cardio, and most interestingly his diet. We all know Mike is Mr. High intensity/Low-Volume, so seeing the fact that he did 3 set workouts every other day was no shock.

The crazy thing was his diet. He did this thing where he would eat 4000 cals one day then 550 cals the next day... Just like 2 protien shakes and a peach. Can someone explain the logic behind this?

I mean like Mentzer or not, he did show up ripped.

Grams and grams of juice I'd guess, because typically (ala Chris Aceto) caloric deficit should be no more than 10% at a time.

At least a peach is a low GI carb source.

Mentzer was crazy - Many people that were around venice during his years there will confirm that.

Well yeah.. That IS kinda well documented, but I don't see him any different than Einstein and so many other brilliant people.

I don't know if Mentzer belongs in the same category, because i don't exactly look at him being all that much of a genious. His ideas are flawed to an extent and they became worse over the years.

but u gotta give the man credit, wether it was good genetics, alot of gear or both he came in looking good.

i'm a big fan but....he did have some theories that were correct according to the "science" available to him at the time but were impractical in use to most people. i think the reason why he was so important to bb is because he made everyone think instead of following the weider heard. incidently, he didn't think there was any difference in carb sources...he would eat a loaf of bread per day for his carb source.

Well keep in mind his theories only invloved natural athletes... Dorian Yates was the only BBer he trained and he applied his threories in a different way to accomidate to Yates accelerated recovery.

i thought the training was interesting too....he would do full body workouts 3 days per week with about 25-30 sets total. i saw the breakdown in ironman and those workouts were way higher volume than Aruthur Jones recommended.

he did do more sets then jones prescribed but later as you read his books he gets into less and less volume, i like the way he describes working out is like getting a tan, you have to do it gradually and not get burnt!

Never saw anything like that. I think you might be thinking of someone else.

mentzer definitely couldn't have done 25-30 sets when his high intensity training routines kept him in the gym around 20-30mins tops according to his H.I.T. book. Also, he believed in recovery of 10-14 days for each bodypart.

"His ideas are flawed to an extent and they became worse over the years"

Einstein was a womanizer, and stupid in some facets of life. That didn't make him crazy.
