I keep hurting my knee. When I do heavy squats my knee kinda hurst. Its only my left knee. I had it pop about 6 months ago on a heavy leg press and I think that did it. I took a couple of weeks off and went to the doc. It hurt to just walk or sleep. I had an MRI done. He said I may have had a cist(spelling ?) under my knee cap and it had just left because the pain just went away. Well it hurt again after doing squats last week. He thought it was a torn miniscus back 6 months ago....I wonder if maybe I am bending my knee's wrong. I dont bounce at the bottom but I wonder if maybe my left knee shifts out to the left and maybe thats fucking me up. Anyhow I may start wrapping it Im only 25 and I aint stopping doing squats so any help would be nice. I know its hard to help over the net but thnaks bros for any input...

This was posted by Pullnbig On Do deadlifts thicken waist...Good post by the way.. I forgot

without seeing you squat it is hard to tell. i have widened my stance a bit as of late and turned my toes further out and the pain in my kness is substantially less. also wrapping your knees will make a big difference. you will have to do more weight but the kness are protected very well. get a good quality wrap and snug um up pretty tight. once a hit over 500 i wrap cause if i dont my knees will be sore for several days. post a pic if you can of your squat stance and on the leg press.

when i go to the gym to train legs, i allways start with squat.
here is my "ritual" :

Before getting my workout shorts on i massage the legs for 5 min each with menthol massage lotion (warms).

then i stretch all leg muscles lightly.

then i do 60 reps with allmost no weight on the legextension

now its squat time from start and to i reach 75% of my max weight, there i use thermal wraps for my knees, i put them on before i start and take then off when the weight is about 75%
they look like theese : http://www.bowlersparadise.com/shop...mages/thermo_knee_support_open_patella_lg.jpg
(just without any hole in it...they are not too tight either !)

when i reach 75% of max, then i start using powerlifter knee wraps, only i dont put them on so tight, i just use them to keep the knee pain away...not for strength !

this routine works wonders for me, no kneepain at all, and my knee has been dislocated 3 times !

....and my legs grow just fine too :D

Good luck bro ! :)

Check out these knee wraps, You think they would help ?

http://www.monstermuscle.com/shoes.asp

those are good wraps. thats what i wear.

walk on the treadmill for 10 minutes before you stretch. start with the bar on you warm ups and add weight slowly til you get to your work set/sets. if you kness are hurting dont do extensions.

video you squats and send me the clip and maybe we can get ya straightened out. film it from a couple of differnt angles as well.

i posted a fewclips of some squats of mine in the training video section. scroll down to the 16th frame in there. there are some deads, board presses and a few other misc stuff. not all of the clips are me. some are other guys at the gym.

check out the viodeos. there may be something in there to help. the reason i posted the videos and will contiue to do so is so people can see good form and differnt training techniques.

Alot of time I feel kinda guilty soaking up all the free advice. Thanks for all your time....:D

I rarely ever use knee wraps but I do wear the Rehband knee sleeves when I do my events to keep the heat in.

One of the good things about training WSB is this. The way that I build my squat is by doing wide stanced box squats...which do not hurt my knees. I'm also training with a percentage which is good for building the squat, speed, and light enough to not kill my body and joints. On the other day (ME Lower day) I will do a good morning or a deadlift...which do not hurt my knees.

I hope that later in life my knees will thank me for training like I do.

It is possible, but I highly doubt that a meniscus would have popped if and when it went (it's more like a ligament to pop when they go). Seeing as how that is a highly avascular structure, it probably wouldn't have healed enough to just "quit hurting" without some good rehab. Plus, a torn meniscus would have been pretty obvious on the MRI scan, even to only a decent orthopod.
I also doubt that a cyst would have just "gone away" in that area. The continuous movement in the joint EVERY step you take, regardless of if you were doing squats or not, would have been more than enough to keep it inflamed.

My guess would be chondromalacia. Articular surface (cartilage, think: backside) of the kneecap degrades and softens, so you get some grinding in the area, since the back of the patella isn't in the shape it's supposed to be. Do you get any clicking, grinding, popping, or catching in the knee capsule when you're just flexing and extending it, or just pain when you squat? Best way to check is to (or preferably have someone else who knows what they're doing) put a hand over the bottom part of the patella/upper patellar tendon and then flex and extend the knee. If you feel any catching or grinding, it's probably chondromalacia.

I can feel like a slight grinding or popping when I extend my leg and I have my hand on my knee cap. What kind of treatment can I do to help this problem if that may be the issue ? I think it hurts when I go heavy doing squats. Atleast thats when it gets agravated, then its slight pain through daily activities. Id like to get it taken care of b/c heavy squats are one of my favorite movements. I'll have to check but it may not hurt when I actually do squats I am just afraid that it may not be benificial in the long run. I am holding of my cycle until I am sure I can do mty routine the way I want...Thanks for your help guys...

Well, if it is chondromalacia, and this is something that you'd need an orthopedic to check out to be absolutely sure of, then you'll most likely have to have the knee scoped to clear it out. Nothing really major, and a fairly short rehab in comparison to most knee surgeries (weeks to *maybe* 2 months to be back to full go, as opposed to a minimum of 6 months for ACL reconstruction). My advice is to schedule an appointment with an orthopod and have them check it out. They'd be able to tell you MUCH better than me over the internet.
