So I've realized my neck is not as strong as it should be, and that's b/c i really don't train my neck at all. I honestly don't know anyone that does, but I'm going to start as soon as I can figure out some common exercises for the neck ...

Suggestions??

I've seem this midevil looking contraption that straps to your head with a chain where you hook the weight to and you proceed to do neck exercises that way

lay down on a bench wiht your neck and traps hangin off, hold a weight to your head (with a towel touching your head so it doesnt hurt), then do a "nod" type movement (bring your chin to your chest and back) for reps. this is what my coach used to have us doing for wrestling. Alot of bodybuilders will say not to do neck exercises thoguh

i saw a guy using one of thoes head strappy things, "neck lifting"..........looks like an accident waiting to happen. really , why on earth would you like to buff out your neck?

maybe to avoid getting choked out during fights or when wrestling?

for boxing what we did was just for a warmup, but it could be used to add strength too just do more reps. while standing, arms at your sides, just twist your nech back and forth kind of fast. do maybe 20-25 reps. Then, nod your head up and down, same reps. Then do circles with your head(like you would try to crack your neck) clockwise - 15 reps, then counter clockwise - 15 reps. You could do that whole routine a couple times each day, mix up the reps for whatever suits you. I noticed an increase in neck size after doing them for a couple weeks.

neck exercises and forearms exercises together.

Marilyn Manson has created a great way to exercise is neck. give it a try. Donate a rib or two to the "SuckurSelfAssociation"

bro, do you fight(i'm guessing you do from your avatar)? if so you know that its positioning not neck strength that keeps you from getting choked out.
but it would be kinda funny to be that guy that walks into the party and everyone goes "damn that mutha-fuka got a buffed ass neck"........lol

well the bigger the neck, maybe the harder it is to get a good lock on it?
i dunno, my neck is "average" and i'm not planning on doing any neck exercises, i'm accident prone so i'd end up hurting myself for sure.

Your neck will grow a bit from standard exercises. No need to isolate it. If you want to work your traps, try deadlifting or maybe some power shrugs.

Damn guys, bunch of f-ing joksters around this place huh? I 'judged' this b/c after my ju-jitsu class and football games, my neck ALWAYS hurts for days after (without any real direct trama usually). Just thought I'd throw it out to you guys ... I think there was a real answer in all those replies somewhere ... got a smirk out of some of them.

I got a neck harness from APT a while back. Haven't really started using it yet though. It comes in handy to have a really strong neck plus it looks badass:

Maybe you should check your posture first. Bad posture can cause all kinds of neck problems.

at least you have a good attitude, some get all bent outta shape with a little joking. i hear you on the soreness. i think that just rolling often will strengthen you up in the neck. i used to get crazy sore after bjj class, now just my ears get it. keep at it but i'd sty away from any neck specific exercises.
insane thats a great example of a soild neck! lmfao at that pic of henery!

Some people have short necks, and for them, just having big traps is enough. But people with long necks (ectos), can grow nice traps and still have thin necks. I made a similar question many time ago on this forum and also the general advice was not doing any isolation work for it. I was doing wrestler bridges at that time and continued doing them. I had quiet good progress. They may be dangerous, but I never had any serius injury (just big soreness sometimes). It's just my personal experience, but they were good to me.

If talking about thick necks, I think Mariusz is one of the kings.
