national geographic special: fight science. quite interesting too! part 1 covers the punching power and it involves boxing too..so that might help. enjoy
that is cool...
wheres bruce lee...
it seems to me it goes beyond just one bodypart, but the whole body is more important than the legs or hips its everything and your bodyweight heavier you are the harder you punch using whole body...

Scientists in the 1940's did tests with chimps to test how much impact the primate skull could withstand. They put the chimp's head in a vice and swung a bowling ball on the end of a rope into the chimp's head. The chimp was not knocked out.

As I understand it, a knockout punch is one which not only lands with great force but also causes the head to twist. The knockout punches we see on highlight reels usually involve a hit on the chin lifting or twisting the head.

We used to get boxing trainers in for pre-season when I played rugby. They said when you're strong in the abs you're strong everywhere. What I think that means is core power translates into punching power. I don't think you could argue with that. Perhaps shoulder press rather than bench press would also help your punch. A big chest makes a fighter stand too square. Bouncers at nightclubs often have big chests but can't fight for shit.

If you want to land a knock out punch, hit hard and fast but also with great accuracy. If you don't want to get knocked out, keep your chin down or better still walk away.

any tips for me, bro? could use some. thanks

pivoting through your rear foot is essential. think of the motion like stubbing out a cigarette on the ground. As you begin, shift the load more onto the ball of the foot on the rear leg, as the punch extends begin rotating through your trunk and pivoting on the rear foot.

As the arm is fully extended, the rear leg should be extended and the ball of the foot should still be in contact with the ground and fully pivotted .As you bring the arm back in,rotate through the hips and the foot again.

just practice this slowly onto the bag and get the rhythm right. eventually it will be a strong snapping fluid motion

if your below 18 maybe you could go to a youth center... i used to box their every day of the week i wanted for 18 bucks a month.

Thanks for that link! I saw it a few times, but always missed the beginning :)
It'll also be a great aid when I teach, to help explain some basics, and differences between styles.

I'd mostly agree. I boxed with my weight from 180 through 250 lbs over the years, in my own categories and open class. I never had a problem knocking someone out that had 40 lbs on me, and the only serious knockout I suffered, with a concussion to boot, was when I was about 240 lbs fighting a skinny 170 lbs guy. It was a friendly training match and I could've walsed over him 300 times, but was told to take it easy on him and just let him have a go at it. But that doesn't matter. He had me with a lucky punch in the fourth round, and down I went. I couldn't imagine he could ever come up with a punch to knock me out, but he sure did it.
