question on getting certified...

7 wks off (broken elbow!)
OK, i want to get certified. I have taken a few courses and i read books on training/nutrition or whatever while im in my business classes...lol. Anyways, i thought about just getting the $50 personal training certification to get my foot in the door and get some extra money while at college. Basically, i get the 1-4 week course information and can take the test within a year and if i pass i get the certification - if i fail i pay 10 bucks to take it again. What do you guys think, good idea or bad. thanks

Its a tough call. Depending on the gym you want to work for you'll need at least the lowest cert they require. Without any experience you wont be able to freelance. Id ask around local gyms to see whats what. Then you'll most likely be assigned some old women - basically bottom of the heap work. It takes a long time time build any status or reputation in the PT field, thats the main reason I never took it up. If you know any well established PT's you might find it helpful to ask them all these sorts of questions.

Yeah i dont know if this is what i want to do. Thats why im majoring in business. I would rather have that aspect towards opening a gym with my brother then anything else. I just thought i would get certified on the side and get some extra money over the summer and during school. I mean i could regulate when my trainees visit so it works well with the college schedule. Thanks tho.

Im doing my my PT certification through ISSA cuz that is the only cert. the gyms in my area require. I need a better job cuz mine is starting to conflict with school, so thats why Im going to be PT, im almost done too!!

I've worked as a trainer at both New York Sports Club and at Equinox, and the general consensus among trainers both young and old is that along with the own cert the gym requires you to get, ACE or AFFA is a good one to start out with, and NASM is the most comprehensive and recognizable. IMO and those I worked with at least.

i got ace certified first. pretty easy if you have decent study habits. i just recently got nasm certified because its more intense and indepth. the nasm cert is definatly harder to test. ace is pretty cheap, and a good rescource as far a jobs go.good luck.
