rack deads alright?

hey guys. i messed up my knee a bit a few weeks back and it has been real hard to do deads straight off the floor. i was wondering if doing them in the power rack would still be an effective way to do them, and if so how should i modify form-that is, where on teh rack should i set the bar, adn are there any other techniques i can employ taht may be different for rack deads? thanks.

If you messed up your knee then give it a break, rest and let it heal. You can do leg extentions until you're dead with minimal discomfort to your knee.

I agree. Plus, if you messed up your knee, anything weight-bearing above your normal bodyweight and walking is going to cause pain and more problems. Just think about the kinetic chain and such........you may be holding 300lbs, but that means that the hips are supporting that much weight, plus the torso and upper limbs, the knees are supporting those things plus the thighs, and so on. Whereas you may only be exerting, say, 175lbs of force on those knees on a normal basis, you would be putting a load more than that on them if you loaded up a bar and did deads. Especially if you screwed up the meniscus that will cause some major pain. Rest. Lots and lots of Rest. Do upper body and some cardio (hand ergometer, perhaps?) but let the knee heal.
 
Leg extentions place the most shearing stress to the knee, other than smith machine squats. Those movements are crap and not neccessary. The hack machine likewise allows no freedom of movement and does the same thing as a smith machine squat.
