Riddle me this

2300 is most likely your BMR, which your body expends just to keep you were alive. Imagine you were in a coma... your body would be burning 2300 cals to stay alive. Daily life adds to that, plus training, etc.

According to the calc I used its my tdee with 3x week excerice frequency, keep in mind I'm not a large guy to begin with. In any case looks like the recommendation I'm seeing around the 'net varies a lot. How many cals should I be eating over maintenance?

Ok you're 5'9" 185lbs. How old are you? You have very similar starting stats to me (28yo 5'10" @190lbs). My BMR is around 1950calories. My TDEE is BMR multiplied by an activity factor of 1.6 bc of a physical job and other activities. So my starting TDEE was around 3100calories. To gain I needed to eat more than that obviously. Give me your age and I'll plug the numbers in and see what I get. 2300 is way too low to be a TDEE for you

You're taller and heavier than me, and I'm at about 4,000 cals a day. Start with ~500 cals above maintenance and adjust as needed.

BMR is around 1700-1800 calories and if you're moderately active that means a TDEE of 2700 calories. To gain weight you should be doing around 3300+ calories. 200-225g protein and 75g fat minimum. Rest of your calories can come from any macros but try and add carbs obviously to keep intensity up in the gym.
