i am trying to build up some damn stamina...

i have started running .. not far at all, maybe 10 minutes of jogging (i dont know how far)..

but my question is.... when i am finished my runs, my quads and calves hurt like i have just done squats (not as bad as squats, but same kind of pain) ... so should i not go jogging and then workout my legs the next day, or vice versa?
 
I'd take at least the day before you work legs off from jogging.

Also, the tightness and/or pain you feel will eventually go away - when I first started running quite a bit, my legs hurt like hell, but by the end of cross country season my sr. year, I ran like it was nothing.

I'm trying to get back into running right now, (trying to cut) and it's a bitch. I hadn't run but once since last July, and now I've gone from being able to run 5miles in 30 minutes or so to barely being able to run 2 miles period.

since im on the subject, i got a few more q's :p

1 . when i am running it feels like my throat is closing up and makes it hard to go for distance .. did u have the same type of problem when u started ( im thinking its because i hardly do cardio) .

and, i am by no means trying to lose weight.. i am trying to put on as much weight as possible, but i would really like to have good stamina and healthy lungs.. do you think running will make it too hard to gain weight>?
 
If you are trying to gain weight and stamina at the same time you are screwing yourself, pick one and go with it. If you want to burn fat and not muscle then stay under 65% heart rate, which you will be in violation of when you jog unless you are really, really skinny.

I did 5 days of cardio in a row, an hour each day, over 65% heart rate and I lost 1/4" on my arms in those 5 days. If you were genetically blessed on the other hand maybe you can pull it off, I can't.

i am really skinny though... but i might just try walking on the treadmill then to help me get more cardiovascularly fit
 
Cardio and fat burning are not really the same thing, there lies your problem. Do you want to be big, or do you want to be a marathoner? Last time I looked at my heart rate it was 52 at rest, my heart is doing just dandy, I dont need to run.

If you want endurance, then being 300 pounds isn't going to help you out. Be big and heavy, or be a marathoner, your choice. No matter how strong your heart is you aren't going to be doing 4 minute miles when you are heavy, and frankly its not healthy to attempt it either.

If you are only looking at moderate size then thats fine, get into MMA or something and stay fit with a little extra muscle.
 
i think i remember Kevin Levrone sprinting with Michael Johnson, the fastest man on earth :P i think he proves that being a sprinter and a BB is posible. just my .02

i would build up some mass first, then start the endurance stuff. seems it is a little easier to gain endurance once you have the muscle and not vice versa
 
Thompson, sprinting requires POWER, not endurance. Ben Johnson did not in the least bit resemble a marathoner.

Rich Gaspari had a reputation as a cardio man, he was certainly quite vascular. I would go for size first then worry about endurance later, but if you are looking for true bodybuilding or powerlifting, then throw that crap away IMO.

Sprinting and distance running are two entirely different animals. Compare a distance runner (hell, not even a marathoner - make it a 5K'er or 10K guy) with a sprinter.
 
Exactly, a Honda Hybrid is not a Yamaha R1. One is brute power per pound and fast, one is built for distance on low fuel consumption.
 
I run quite often and have not lost any size. I don't run any faster than 6 mph but I find that you will need a lot more carbs in your diet if you do so. I can eat like a horse now and not gain any weight. However, I love how my body feels when I am in good cardiovascular shape. I would just try it out and see how you do.

Ditto. I love feeling healthy, but I hate to do it.

Also, I have this weird way of running and gaining weight. Like, you said you lost all that, I've gained 3 pounds or so since I started running regularly again at the beginning of this week. My Sr. year of HS, at the beginning of cross country season, I weighed 174. 3 months later, running 5 miles or so 5-6 days per week, I'd gained up to 185, while leaning out quite considerably.
 
i'm just curious... why are you trying to increase stamina? especially for someone who is already skinny, distance running is very counterproductive to gaining weight. besides, it just plain sucks! :) and its hell on your joints. of course, i'm a 300 lb lineman, so i'm a little biased.
