My gym has parallel bars..so the palms of my hands are basically facing each other...lean forward and use a controlled negative explosive positive...
To be honest I don't even know if I will have pain anymore because it has been so long since I have done them...also get this pain with close grip bench...
Thought it was from a tightness in the pecs so I do the DC weighted stretch for a minute...very painful but well worth it..pecs look fuller..don't know if it has solved the problem though...
Sorry for the hijack! Thought that many could benefit from a discussion on dips as a lot of people I know had to stop doing them from the sternal pain associated with them.
