SSRI or Low Test responsible for NO LIBIDO?

Newbie here who is still researching testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) before making the lifetime testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) commitment.
Reading all these post on testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), I’ve noticed how many guys using testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) have at one time been on an SSRI and then felt much better (and even gone off the SSRI) after going on TRT. I'm 45 and have been on an SSRI for the last 10 years and want to go on testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) to resurrect my dead libido. My test is around 290 (200-1100 range), so not sure if the SSRI killed my libido or it’s my test level???
Also, has anyone been prescribed testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for low libido even though their blood test came back normal (whatever that means.......)?
Thanks in advance for you advice!

SSRI's will effect libido. No doubt about it. Dopamine based SSRIs tend to have less of an impact (Welbeuterin) but can still cause problems.

Many people find Buspar in addition to SSRI can aid in sexual side effects. I decided to stop the SSRI all together and just use Buspar. Its an old school med but it works well.

Boosting that testosterone score should help as well. however, i would change one aspect only to see if it makes an improvement. Start with the Buspar. Its a $4 generic

Agreed...go slow..trt can put lead back in your pencil if properly done...or the interest in having sex as well..ssri s can negatively affect this....trust me...

SSRI's DESTROYED my libido. I was taking Sertraline (Zoloft)/150MG daily for the last 5 or so years.
I started weaning off of the SSRI VERY SLOWLY to avoid withdrawal. After 8 months of weaning, I am down to about 18MG daily. Now my libido is MUCH stronger, even with Low T.
I am, however, on testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) with Maximus to get my T levels where they need to be.
Get the process going with Maximus Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and then Chip will consult with you and help you in regard to your Low T, if that's whats needed.

I AM NOT advising weaning off your SSRI's. That is a decision for YOU to make for yourself.

Hope this helps.

My libido is through the roof since I started hrt.. But, I was so horny that I wasn't lasting very long and that got a little frustrating! So I just started w/ a low dose of paxil and I am like a porn star in bed now.. I am rock hard and cum when I want to.. Not trying to brag but just a little info..
The funny thing is bfore starting Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) I could never tolerate any SSRI's, they always made me jittery.. I think I found what works for me in all areas of my life.. I feel calm, clearheaded and confident almost all the time now.. Call Chip and get that Test level up

yes I have the same problem TR2838. testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) makes me so horney that I blow a load fast.
Now I have to spank the monkey a few minutes before I have sex to with the girl.
that solved my problem.

also I can do her twice. First time is quiick then wait a few mins and do her again and 2nd time is long.

-Started on Klonopin and Luvox about 10 years ago for anxiety & OCD.
-September 2009 libido was starting to go and test level came back at around 500.
-November 2010 went off Klonopin (due to feeling sleepy all the time), started feeling like crap and libido went dead.
-April 2011 test came back at around 290.
-June 2011 doctor put me on Wellbutrin to help with libido. I only lasted a week on it as it killed my stomach.
I don’t want to be on Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for the rest of my life, but also don’t want to feel like crap and have no libido from an SSRI. Being off an SSRI would be hell as well.
Maybe I just answered my own question……
Thanks for all the support!

I was recently on Pristiq, which is an SNRI (similar to SSRI).

It reduced my libido, and also caused delayed ejaculation for me.

Sounds like your test is definitely low. testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) would be a great thing for you to try, if you are up for it. After all, there is a more substantial history and more knowledge of the effects of testosterone than there is with any SSRI.

I'm really looking forward to testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) myself, but I'm still in research phase like you.

The real reason I wanted to post, though, is to recommend that you try counseling from a therapist. It could help you feel a lot better, and it won't cause the shitty effects of an SSRI.

Don't start the testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) and therapy at the same time though. You want to know which one works best for you.

Best of luck to you.

I have to jump in on this... You will definitely know when the testosterone kicks in.. If you keep your estrogen in check, your libido will shoot through the roof! Your therapist would have to look like Megan Fox to get your wood up like testosterone will.. LOL.. You have low test.. Treat it!

this^^ i myself take Lexapro,Wellbutrin and Valium and before trt,i was miserable and my test levels were lower than yours and once i got on trt,my pencil lead perked up and my libido went up,so i agree trt is something i would consider

Yeah I'm on celexa and wellbutrin. Tested 268 for total test. Test has made my libido skyrocket but I still need viagra and cialis to keep it up because of the celexa. I want to slowly come off of it because of this but I'm a little nervous about it. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) done properly can help you a lot.

Hi Pumpedd- I would like to ask how you came off klonopin?
I currently take 1.0-1.5mg to help me sleep, however I really would like to get off...any help, i.e. weaning schedule, etc would be appreciated!

Yeah instead of taking SSRIs I take timed release serotonin, n-acetyl-l-tyrosine, and gaba. And my dick works without viagra!

But SSRIS are very well known for mutating dopamine neurons which stimulate testosterone production...and keep your dick hard.

Drop your dose every 2 weeks like this:
1.5
1.0
.5
.25
.125
off

you'll be off in 2 1/2 months with no withdraws.. This is how I got off Klonipin but I had to come down from 3mgs.. Whatever you do, don't go cold turkey! That's very dangerous and really no point to it bc you will feel withdrawls for at least 2 months, and that's hell! I say all this from experience.. Best of luck! Go slow and methodical!

agreed..and the key is to not up the dose at any point in your schedule as it ll have you, possibly taking two step s back.

Like a fat farm candidtae who get s loose with a cheesecake..slow and easy...but never back up.

Got off Klonopin very slowly - over a 5 month period. I was on .5 mg 3 times a day. I just decreased dosage in extremely small steps. The key for me was that I always got my body use to the new lower dosage before taking the next step, so no problems when tapering off. When I got down to .2 mg a day, my dosage frequency went from 3 times a day to 2, then just kept reducing the dose till .1 one time a day, then .1 every other day till finally was able to get off the klonopin. Felt like crap for the next six months from withdraws, but it was better than feeling hung over and falling asleep all over the place while on klonopin. Very addicting shit! I was able to quit drinking overnight, but this crap grabs you by the balls.
Good luck to you
