Many guys either do cycles and lose a LOT of mass at cycle end, or do SHORT cycles, or do mass phases backed right up to cutting cycles that because of their lack of knowledge about how to cut end up losing muscle. One of the most important things you can do in your quest to add and keep mass is making sure that you maintain newly acquired muscle for the longest time possible. Going up ten lb lean mass and then losing 5 sends the wrong signal to your body. The longer you hold onto muscle the more your body will tend to believe that is your “new” weight and you are more likely to keep that muscle even when dieting, missing training due to injury, or when training non-optimally.
That is one of the prime reasons long cycles, and/or long mass periods (lean mass not get fat diets) are better than constantly yo-yoing like so many do.
