training for mma

I been wrestling freestyle for 15 years and greco-roman for the last 9. Also 6 years of schoolboy. Been boxing for 2 years. I weight train 3 times a week, doesnt effect me much, I look at it as cardio.
imo wrestling is the base of fighting, if you dont have solid grappling skills and good takedown defense, your screwed. Most of the best fighters came from a wrestling background coleman, randleman, hughes, couture, ortiz, liddell, lindland, shamrock, even tank abbott.

exactly.....i do alittle wrestling mainly for balance and shoot ins.

as far as doing fancy takedowns like double croth or firemans carry and that shit.......forget about it.

the only takdowns i do is bearhug clinch, single leg takedowns, and double leg takedowns(without going on my knees).

when you fight mma....u have less options at your side.

if you are planning to do hardcore mma(mixed martial arts) and practice everyday, you can't really train to get big. you'd burn too many calories.
just fyi for guys who think they can do both hardcore.....you have to either lessen your training in mma or weights to do good with the other.

also, i think brazilian jiu-jitsu is one of the best martial arts to know when confronted in a street fight(as well as kickboxing-muay thai).

anybody disagrees?

does anyone think that KARATE or TAE KWON DO is effective in the streets? hahahahahaha.

I boxed for a while and I'll tell you from experience in a street fight. When you can drop someone with a right cross on the chin, before they can even start talking shit....That's effective. See even if they know some shit like karate and all that garbage, all it takes is one shot in the right place.

Cheap shots are always effective lol. jui jitsu, muay thai are good and sambo and kickboxing are alright. Karate and most other types is like two retards racing go karts imo. Old timer does nhb have a website?

the only thing i do is jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and boxing..and yes i put that in my order as skill.

b/c you don't really need to know boxing sooooo well to win a street fight...all you need to know are the basic jabs, hooks, bob/weave....and sometimes parrying. as for wrestling all you need to is be good at your shoot-ins and that is a matter of practice and dedication. all the takedowns that you really need to do are single legs, double legs, and bearhug clinches....no fancy olympic wrestling crap.

and then theirs jiu-jitsu......the smack daddy of all........submissions can finish a person sooo fast. you can literally dissassemble the guy. not to mention you can also do all these moves from the most underestimated position....the gaurd.

so yeah....boxing itself will not garuntee anything....what if the guy knows at least some boxing defense to avoid a hook to the chin...then you're in deep shit my friend....b/c what if he's a star studded grappler. ouch!

no no....just don't talk shit against grapplers(wrestlers, jiu-jitsu, sambo)

if you want to prove your point...go to any jiu-jitsu school that does mma also and you'll see why...a single hook won't do shit(or in your case...an attempt to)

I agree with you except, you need to know more than just the basic single and double leg takedown. Those you need, but what are you going to do from the clinch? especially if someone is overpowering you. Just to name a couple, head and arm, underhook takedowns, suflex, and ankle pics. I've seen all of these utilized in mma fights beautifully. You also need to know how to pummel to get arm control. Very, very, very important. YOu will need that for knees and elbows to the face , stopping clinch takedowns, and to keep safe in your guard. And most importantly is your defense, you need to be able to stuff and counter all takedowns that could be used or your fucked, and going to end up mounted or in your guard wishing you knew how to stop a takedown. I dont know much about jiu jitsu as far as grappling goes, but i would assume they teach you how to pummel and get arm control atleast.

The full mount ain't that great. I'd rather have a side mount position so I can knee to belly that ass. It's too easy to get flipped over if you on top in a full mount, as ironic as it seems. If you fighting a guy who knows nothing about jiu jitsu and he gets the full mount on you, it'll be easy to turn that. Damn easy in fact. That's IF he can even get that close lol.

ofcourse if someone tries to clinch me...the moment i notice that...i push their hips with my two hands to create space so they cannot complete their bearhug clinch. for the double and single leg counters, i would sprawl and hook (depending which side) under their armpit.

ofcourse i know the basic defenses of wrestling and how to switch back and fourth with underhooks and overhook handpositions.

but yeah i agree with you...u have to know defenses of takedowns. that's very important.

to be honest..the only reason why i do mma.....jiu-jitsu, wrestling, striking is b/c of my family. just wanna protect the ones that i love.

plus i have the baby on the way...so really really protective.

and actually to be honest....my jiu-jitsu base is pretty solid....to the point where i wanna try to strengthen my other points in mma.

hey ....do u recommend greco-roman wrestling or muay thai for a developing ''base''? i know both are good ...but which one is more essential?

greco-roman is definitly more essential for base. imo randy couture has the best base in mma right now, olympic greco roman wrestler.

You can find a camp or clinic at www.usawrestling.com make sure you go to a greco-roman camp. freestyle is pretty much no holds barred wrestling anything goes, but you want to focus on standup so greco is the best choice for your needs. im not sure if you need a sanction card to go or not, i dont remember them ever checking me. so you might want to call ahead of time. i believe a sanction card is like 40$. that also allows you to go to tournaments though so its a plus. the season is wrapping up right now so your best bet would be attending clinics and camps, lots of helpful bros there. dan severn was actually one of my clinic coaches back in the day.

do you have to wear those tight spandex clothing....see....my legs are GOOD AND BAD. my quads and hamstrings are freakishly big...yet my calves are under the average guys standards

is there a place where they do'nt have to wear the stardard wrestling attire?
