Training with aging...

I've been lifting since I was 15. Started cross-traing in the military and have always been in good shape. Went through extensive physical training in the military at 22 yrs. old. It seems my body just soaked it up and adapted just fine. Now I'm 36 and finding that I ache alot more and seem to be quite a bit more stiff than I remember during heavy training. However, I'm going from boxing to MMA..haven't boxed in 8 years. The increase in training load with the impact of heavy bag hitting and jumping rope and sparring has brought a new obstacle,...I seem to hit a wall. I got to a heavy load of training then my joints just started killing me (knees, ankles, back, neck) is this just being 36 or am I missing some nutrition or what. I just hit a wall and couldn't train hard for about 10 days. Now I'm back and can train hard but I still wake with joint pain and stiffness. Motrin and celebrex are becoming my best friends as is ben gay. Anyway, does anybody have these issues at 36 or do I need to seek a sports medicine M.D.. What's everybody's experience with traing as you're getting older?

I'm 40. Diclofenac is my best buddy. Get used to the idea of being old but don't let it stop you from doing what you want.

You're going to have a bit of osteoarthritis setting in. Your ligaments and tendons aren't going to have the same elasticity. Generally your warm up and recovery are going to have to take a little longer.

Having said all that, I still think you should keep performing at the highest level you can for as long as you can.

Thanks for all the advice folks. It helps to know I'm not the only one that hurts with training. If somebody said I'm 40 and feel great then I might feel like somethings wrong.
P.S. what is Diclofenac?

I had to back off the weight training. Simple as that. I was trying to do some powerlifting and that doesn't work with mma.
I am only lifting two days a week now. I am also working with IronAddict to get the most from my diet and training for this type of lifestyle.

Well, I'm 40 and I do feel great. I just have pain. The only time I feel crap is when I can't do stuff.

Diclofenac is usually sold as Voltaren. It works for me, especially if used in conjunction with paracetemol. I have not tried Celebrex.

If you're 36 and getting back into fighting I say that's brilliant. I still want to play rubgy after a shoulder reconstruction.

Yah, I was lifting 6xper week, running 3xper week, long bike once per week and doing ok. But then when I went back into boxing with the jumping rope...my knees just had it. Quite a bit of pain so I quit running and just went with bike 3x per week and had to quit jumping rope also. too much impact. I moved weights down to 3xper week and then went to MMA traing 5x per week. I figure I'm not going to get bigger. But at 205 now I'll need to cut weight to 185 for a fight. Cuz I'm not fightin those 230lbs guys that cut down to 205. Anyway, I do feel great like Melbourne said...just alot of pain, in the neck, upper back, hands, ankles, KNEES and low back. But hey...my shoulders are doing alright...LoL!

Brother, I know exactly what you mean.
I could handle the bjj with my weight training, but when I added judo and muay thai, it was just too much. So I now lift twice a week and do cardio three times a week in the ring with resistance bands, as well as three times a week on the street.

I'm one of those 230+ guys at 5'9" who has to cut a ton. I am cutting for a kick boxing match now, but I only have to get down to 214 for it. That sure is nice. It's still quite a drop from 235 though.

I recently had my knee and my elbow in the mri machine. lol I busted up both feet last Monday. My ortho said to take some time off because all of this was only going to get worse if I didn't. This time off feels pretty good on the old joints, but it drives the mind crazy!

48 here and lifting as heavy as ever. dropped 60lbs in the last 16 months and didnt lose any strength. obviously i have had to train smarter and listen more closely to my body but the strength is still there and i hope to continue to compete in powerlifting for years to come.

keep plugging away racerx. lots of the top lifters in pling are in their late 30s and 40s.

Thing is PB, he is focusing on mma. MMA and PL don't work well together.

He is focused on mma and not getting bigger. Part of that info was in another of his threads, so you couldn't be expected to know that.

I put in an order for voltaren this a.m. I'm trying to get away from the Celebrex cuz I been using it for some time. I remember some guy gave me some Vol when I crashed in a race and broke a clavicle. Seemed to work pretty well.
Yes, MMA is the focus for now. I figure it's going to be the last extreme activity I'll get to do in my life. I did bodybuilding as a teen, then powerlifting, then military stuff, then motocross, then sportbike racing and I'll finish with MMA and a good pain management program...LoL!

i read he was cross training. i was using myself as an example, the sport is irrelevant. i also made note that im 60lbs lighter now so im confused as to why you mentioned getting bigger.

the point im making is i listen to my body more closely now. as the body ages more recovery time is needed. i was also encouraging him and letting him know that athletes compete longer now-a-days. ask randy couture.

Randy Couture is a phenom. One of those indescribable anomolies (sp?)

You got that right for sure....more recovery and listening CLOSELY to the body.

Randy...doesn't count. He's like Fedor in that neither of them are human.

I'm 38 and training harder than ever. My shoulders and arms seem to ache and be a little stiffer after training. I have come to the conclusion that I will train with and around the pain. It is a reminder that my body is getting older. I say FUCK gettin' older. You only live once and I am determined to achive the body I want. At 38 I have a better body than 99.99% of all the people I know. It makes me lift with determination and a desire to atract girls 19-25!

Now or never fella's

Do I remember somebody posting somewhere that in Europe they have a new drug for degenerative joints? But you had to have an overseas source to get it? Seems like I remembered something of that nature coming up. So I told my dad about it, and he wants me to research it further.

Not to change the subject but, until last week I didnt think Cro-Cop was human either. I just sat staring at the screen when he got KO'd.
I hope Randy destroys Gabe Gonzaga.
