The Ultimate Fighting Championship expects to close out 2008 with a bang as the promotion has decided on three key match-ups for their year end show on Dec 27.

Interim heavyweight champion, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will face Frank Mir, while light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin returns to action defending his belt against Rashad Evans and Wanderlei Silva goes for three in a row against former 205lb champion, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

The news was confirmed by UFC President Dana White to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports.

The fights will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and with those three match-ups along with a solid undercard including Yushin Okami vs. Dean Lister, which was first reported on MMAWeekly.com earlier this week, the UFC is looking at one of their most stacked cards this year.

White told Iole that he wanted to “stack” the end year show and with three huge match-ups, including two title fights, the UFC has done exactly that.

Nogueira and Mir were already expected to meet after their stint as coaches on this season’s version of the “Ultimate Fighter”, but the new bouts announced bring a powerful punch to the card.

Forrest Griffin’s meteoric rise up the light heavyweight division began with his run to win the “Ultimate Fighter” season 1 and culminated with his 5 round win over former champion, Quinton Jackson, in July.

As for Rashad Evans, the “Ultimate Fighter” season 2 winner, he cemented himself in the top contender spot after a devastating knockout of Chuck Liddell in early September.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will also return for the first time since losing his title and going through a very tumultuous summer which included him leaving former trainer, Juanito Ibarra, and his arrest in California after a hit and run chase with local police.

This will be the third time for Jackson to take a shot at former Pride champion, Wanderlei Silva, who defeated Rampage both previous times in dominant fashion while the two fighters were mainstays in the now defunct Pride Fighting Championships.

The event will take place on Dec 27 in Las Vegas, NV.

Now this sounds good... but they announce the other day that UFC 93 is going to be Franklin Vs Henderson.. WTF??? Is it me or does that match up not scream "main event"?? Seriously.. I was completely disappointed to say the least.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has officially announced a return to Ireland on Jan 17, but this time they will be traveling to Dublin for the first time. Former middleweight champion, Rich “Ace” Franklin stays put at 205lbs to face Dan Henderson in a tough light heavyweight showdown as the main event.

Also on the card will be former top light heavyweight stand-out, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua returning for a rematch with Mark “The Hammer” Coleman, who defeated Rua while the two were in Pride a few years ago.

The fight between Franklin and Henderson is the culmination of a tremendous body of work for both competitors as they finally get the chance to square off in the Octagon.

“Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson is a battle between two great former champions who are both looking to get another chance to wear a world title around their waist,” said Dana White in a press release on Wednesday. “Franklin is the former UFC Middleweight champion, and he’s a dangerous striker with solid submission skills – he also showed great takedown defense in his September destruction of powerful wrestler Matt Hamill.”

“Dan Henderson is the former Pride welterweight and middleweight champion. He’s a world class wrestler, known for his great chin and his one punch knockout power. He defeated formidable Brazilian submission specialist Rousimar Palhares in September. These are two fan favorites with a lot of pride on the line as they want to show that they are still among the very best fighters in the world.”

Because the bout between Franklin and Henderson takes place at 205lbs, this could officially eliminate Henderson from the recent rumors that he may coach alongside Michael Bisping, who seems like a logical choice for the United Kingdom squad, in the latest installment of the “Ultimate Fighter” reality series.

The UFC has made no official announcement regarding any coaching possibilities for the show so anything could still happen.

The Jan 17 event will re-introduce fans to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, who had one of the most hyped arrivals ever in the UFC, but did not live up to expectations when he lost to now light heavyweight champion, Forrest Griffin, in Sept 2007.

Rua has since disappeared off the radar due to several knee surgeries that have kept the former Pride champion sidelined for more than a year.

The rematch between Shogun and Coleman should be interesting to say the least as the two fighters have a history that at one time included a feud between to the camps of the two former champions. Coleman defeated Shogun while in Pride after a takedown from the former Ohio State wrestler caused an awkward landing for Rua and his arm broke thus stopping the fight.

Soon after it was almost bedlam as members of Rua’s former team, Chute Boxe, rushed the ring as Coleman celebrated with his Hammer House squad. The grudge between to the two fighters will finally be settled in Ireland in January.

The bout between Shogun and Coleman will be fought at light heavyweight.

More fights are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

No clue bro... I thought he made a perm drop to 185. Guess not. I thought for sure UFC 93 would be Penn/GSP II or even something like Penn/Florian... Hell, I still can't wait to see Thiago Silva murder Machida!!..lol

when do the tickets become available??? this may work perfectly for my vegas trip. it was going to be dec20-27th but maybe i can extend it a day if the old man is on board!

There were a bunch of rumored bouts and PPV cards that have been quashed now.

They had these fights broken up onto different cards through the rumor mill, but now they have been officially moved to UFC 92 and it is a gross card.

BTW, I think it is time to have another UFC event in Canada. It was their fastest sell out in UFC history last time... come back!!!

Thiago got hurt and had to drop the fight. I would have picked Machida over him. It was rumored for a while Machida would fight Shogun but now that's not happening and Machida is left high and dry with no credible opponent.

And backt to Henderson, how is he supposed to build credibility in any division if he keeps jumping back and forth for no reason? He beat Palhares at middleweight which put him one fight away from a rematch with Anderson, so he then jumps back up to 205 for a match with a former middleweight... ??

i can get in on the fight club presale now if i pay 82.50 when buying the tickets. the thing is, now the cheaper seats are available. i wonder if they will still be available on saturday for the regular sale. not sure what price the old man is looking to pay but id be happy to be there. its a fun atmosphere.

Finally some good fights... I am sick of seeing them throw half assed fighters at the good guys. But then again alot of half assed fighters have won lately.

fuck fuck fuck. due to some bullfuckingshit my december vacation might have to be canceled. i checked the cancellation policy and its no different to cancel before december 18th than it is now so im going to wait and hope things work out. either way, i cant buy tickets for the fucking event since we might not go.

Thats disappointing! Ya, I finally went to my first UFC event a few months back and WOW, worth it.. loved it! ..well, my GF paid for the tickets but still well worth it! We were so close, ended up next a 2x UFC vet and his girlfriend.. :)

i would pick franklin in that matchup. he had a great win over hamill in his last fight and lutter before that. he really only got his ass handed to him by anderson silva and i think the 2 losses to silva has had a negative affect on how franklin is perceived. i dont really think thats fair since silva is the lord jesus christ of mma right now and anyone is going to get his ass kicked by him. that include henderson. henderson also hasnt done anything so impressive since joining the UFC.

In K1 Silva lost twice to nobodies, in the same league Henderson was a powerhouse of a fighter and a champ in more than one weight class.
Henderson faired much better against Silva than Franklin
