Why did Mr. Olympians in the early mid 90s outlive those in the late 90s

Hi,

The following is a list of the body builders who won AAU Mr. Olympia title. I found this list on another forum, the source is xxxxxcom. After looking at the age, you begin seeing a trend. The old school MR. Olympians outlived the later. Im wondering if anyone would know why this is? As time progresses so does the power of medicine, and I found it unusual that some died so early.

If anyone has a better list please post.

my guess

higher doses, peptides, growth hormones, insulin, stimulants, all stacked together for longer periods of time.

Pretty much, just abuse with more stronger/potent substances or higher dosages

First off, I do not understand your question. Do you mean 1900's?
I have no idea, but considering the list does not include all the guys that are still alive, nor does it mention cause of death, the whole thing seems irrelevant.

No i dont mean the 1900's. The year on the left side is the year of the competition. If you take a look 1940-1960 the body builders out lived those from the 1960-1990s. The list doesnt include all the guys that are alive because they are most recent. Anyone willing to supplement the list with recent information would be greatly appreciated.

Beyond even the fact that we don't know how they died, is the statistical insignificance of these numbers.
!00,000's of bodybuilders have competed in that time frame with millions more using the same drugs, and a list of 20 or so is all they seem to have. Probably not much higher death rate than the general public.
I'm not saying the trend toward more chemicals and higher doses won't possibly have health repurcussions, just that I believe it is highly overblown.

You might see an age thing happening but you really should look into how they died and list that as well beside it. Might not be what you think you are seeing.

1939 - 2002 Roland Essmaker age 86
1940/41 - 1998 John Grimek age 88
1942 - 1990 Frank Leight age 78
1943 - 2007 Jules Bacon age 89
1944 - 1978 Steve Stanko age 61
1945 - 2008 Clarence Ross age 84
1946 - 2005 Alan Stephan age 81
1947 - 2000 Steve Reeves age 74
1948 - 2002 George Eiferman age 76
1949 - 1992 Jack Delinger age 66
1950 - 1998 John Farbotnik age 72
1951 - 2008 Roy Hilligenn age 85
1952 - 2007 Jim Park age 79
1954 - 2007 Dick DuBois age 74
1955 - 2005 Steve Klisanin 75
1957 - 2005 Ron Lacy age 75
1958 - 1974 Tom Sansone age 38
1961 - 2008 Ray Routledge age 77
1963 - 1993 Vern Weaver age 56
1974 - 2003 Ron Thompson age 59
1977 - 1986 Dave Johns age 40....
1979 - 2001 Ray Mentzer age 47....He died from complications resulting from Berger's disease. Kidney Failure!
1984 - 2009 Joe Meeko age 48....Lyme Disease
1992 - 2003 Mike Scarcella age 39 ....Mike Scarcella died of a beating and GHB addiction in the hospital.

Unless we have each bodybuilders' detailed medical history, a comparison would be fruitless.

Someone correct me if I`m wrong, put I`m pretty sure everyone who has been Mr. O is still alive with the exception of Sergio Oliva, who was in his 70s when he died, I`m not too sure where your coming from. And Sergio was the second Mr. O so if you are asking why the all of the early Mr. O`s are outliving the new ones, I`m not so sure they are, it`s just that the BBs of the 70`s and early 80`s(Arnie, Zane, Columbu) are in their 60-70s and the BBs of the late 80s and 90s(Haney, Yates) are in their 50`s. And considering guys like Zane and Columbo are in their 70s and still kicking, we can`t really say they are dying earlier than their predecessors (Reeves-74,Stanko-61). I guess we will have to wait and see what happens with guys down the road. That being said if they do end up living shorter lives(especially the more recent guys), I`d think it would be due to the increased use of more and stronger drugs, the amount of shit pros are using today is insane.

Im gonna say you will see more deaths due to heart attacks just for the simple fact that guest posing is more predominant now days and these guys get a lot more work. So they have to take more drugs for getting cut that are bad on cholesterol levels. Im sure insulin will start to play a role in deaths here soon to. But I think hgh just fucks people up and makes them look deformed more than actually killing them. But Ive heard of some shitty hgh side effects. Pretty much all anabolic steroid users run the risk of a heart attack being more likely than your normal guy. But at least the pros know they have high cholesterol and use other drugs and a perfect diet to try to counteract it.... I just looked at a sausage mcmuffin and its 235 mgs of cholesterol.... not counting some times having like 5 eggs at 135 mgs of cholesterol a piece with bacon at 20mgs every two pieces and sausage at only god knows what! That's why jay cutler eats egg whites!

Borrowed from another forum, but it saved me from having to do all the footwork myself:

I know this list has more than in the OP, but figured it wouldn't hurt to have additional causes of death when it comes to athletes related to this particular subject. I'd cite the website, but I'm pretty sure that's a no-no. It's a pretty easy google search for those inclined.

Now before folks start freaking out about heart disease as that's obviously the number one cause of death here, I thought I'd quote the CDC's statistics for a point of reference:
CDC said:
  • About 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year–that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.1
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2009 were in men.1
  • Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing more than 385,000 people annually.1
  • Every year about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 525,000 are a first heart attack and 190,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack.2
  • Coronary heart disease alone costs the United States $108.9 billion each year.3 This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity.
I also thought I'd quote the main given reasons for such a high rate of mortality from this disease:
CDC said:
High blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. About half of Americans (49%) have at least one of these three risk factors.7

Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including:
  • Diabetes
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Poor diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Excessive alcohol use
CDC - DHDSP - Heart Disease Facts

Notice how the exact opposite of how this lifestyle still leads to death by the number one killer? This is partly why I feel that while it is important to keep up on your body's overall condition, I feel that blaming AAS for deaths attributed to heart failure is a statistical fallacy. Just some food for thought. :)

Borrowed from another forum, but it saved me from having to do all the footwork myself:

Props to Halfwit for finding a fully developed list. Thanks!

Wow there is a trend of young deaths among these body builders. Thats an eye-opener. None the less Halfwit, despite what the CDC might say there is one thing in common among this list of body builders, and that is they are roiders, therefore more likely than not the cause of death from heart failure is attributed to roids.

While I do agree that enlargement of the heart is completely possible, it's hard to ignore the fact that 50% of us will die from a heart condition. Can steroids contribute to this? Sure. But would I be overly concerned that it's a certainty because the statistics even with those that use AAS agree with the causes of mortality for the general non-AAS using public? Nope.

I do feel that we should always be on top of our health in having regular exams and keeping tabs on our bloodwork, but I can't justify calling AAS a quick trip to the morgue. I'm already fucked as I've been obese and currently do have type II diabetes. So I figure I might as well be swole and look good when I die from a myocardial infarction in 40 years. ;)

well when you look at the stats as 1 in 4 will die from heart disease... the list above is way more than one in 4 i didnt add it up but looks alot more than 1 in 2 aswell so id say the lifestyle is a factor lol... without even looking at this forum i already had an educated guess this lifestyle is bad for our heart (lifestyle, not blaming steroids, maybe its the diet we keep eatting big even after we slow down our workouts, eatting 6000+ calories cant be good lol, not enough cardio... meds are also just a temp fix..... which a lifetime of them could (didnt research) maybe have some side effects along the line of heart disease too) after all many aas users start taking bp, chol, viagra, and other meds wayyyy before the general population

I cant disagree. No one can say smoking causes cancer 100% but smoking may lead to cancer. I went ahead and added the list you posted to mine.

Is myocardial infections common in your fam? How old are you?
