Why wont my legs grow?

Hi,

I have been training for several years, had about a year off while I was training hard at kickboxing. I have been back in the gym for about a year and train every other day.

My question is why dont my legs get any bigger? Originally when I trained I neglected my legs but now I work on them religiously.

I do a dedicated leg work out once a week, which comprises of the following:

squats, 4 x 8-10 reps.
quad extensions, 3 x 8 - 10 reps
hams 3 x 8-10 reps.
calves 4 x 8-10 reps

My weight is aprox 83kg, and I am 6'1

I lift as heavy as I can to get 8-10 reps, often choosing to fail on 8 rather than do 10 reps. On leg squats, I am up to 450lbs. I dont know if that is particularly strong, but the legs still dont seem to get any bigger. Can anyone offer any advice?

I often walk out them gym with difficultly walking down the stairs because I have hammered my legs so hard :(

Should I be feeling lazy about my legs I would put some leg excercises in with my other muscle groups such as chest, or back. Is this a good idea?

Thanks all, :)

Patience man! It takes longer than a year or two to get your legs big.

As long as your gaining 1 rep, and adding very small increases in weight to the bar every week or 2 at the most, your growing well IMO. Do that for 4 years and see how small your legs are.

Also, start doing lunges. They are Very important.

1. Squat ass to the grass. That means squat below parallel as deep as you can. Your calves and hamstrings should touch at the bottom. To do this, you will have to decrease your weight a bit, but it is well worth it. This is actually better for your knees than squatting to parallel. Make sure not to bounce the weight at the bottom and don't lock your knees at the top.

2. Take out leg extensions. If you want to build huge quads, throw in some leg presses OR hack squats in there.

Down this road, in a gym far away, a young man was heard to say, "no matter what i do, my legs won't grow" he tried leg extensions, leg curls, and leg presses , too trying to cheat, these sissy workouts he'd do. from the corner of the gym where the big men train, through a cloud of chalk and the midst of pain where the noise is made with big forty fives, a deep voice bellowed as he wrapped his knees. a very big man with legs like trees. laughing as he snatched another plate from the stack chalking his hands and monstrous back, said, "boy, stop lying and don't say you've forgotten, the trouble with you is you ain't been SQUATTIN'. "

I would do some 20 rep squats for a few weeks, ATF as another poster said is a good idea...

Also some heavy SLDL for the hams and hack squats for some emphasis on the quads.

On leg squats, I am up to 450lbs. I dont know if that is particularly strong

eh.. 10 x 450 would equal a 585 or so max for me, which obviously is very good for someone who's 6'1" & 180lbs.

10 x 450 should mean good leg development (27+ lean quads) IF you're squatting properly which leads me to assume you're squatting down about 3" aka the 'bally squat'. Am I onto something here?

I may not have been clear actually, I dont do squats so much, but my main leg exercise is leg press, where I am sat with my back 45 degrees to the floor and I push the weight upwards.

squats tend to hurt my knees :(

Let the flaming begin.

ok wow... squat is the #1 way to put size on your legs... the day you squat 405 for a set of 20, i guarantee you you wont worry about your legs anymore :) you can legpress 600 pounds for a set of 20, and not have huge legs. squatting is the way to make your body grow, arms, legs, chest, back... all of it. if the squats hurt your knees, wrap them... or what i did, widen your stance a little bit, and kind of flare our your knees, like push them outward... that worked for me :) and im 6'3" so tall people can squat ;)

prolly a form issue if you kness hurt, less you got medical problem. woot hit it on the head more thna likely. he is also proof that you dont have to have any teefies to squat heavy.

Like everyone is saying you need to squat, with good form. Do some ab work to build strong abs you will need them for squatting. Also do deadlifts to strengthen you lower back, as you squat heavier your lower back will need to be stronger.
