Working out on an empty stomach..ok or not?

I wanted to get you guys and gals opinion on this. I normally get up in the morning and eat then go to the gym and workout. Return later that evening to spot my wife and do about 45min of cardio. Well, I am not dropping bodyfat very well even though I am on a really good diet. I eat 7 times a day and I am seeing strength and size results but my belly aint budging much. I wanted to do cardio 1st thing in the morning for about 45min to 1 hr, then do my workout. All this would be on an empty stomach. Bad idea? Should I do the cardio on an empty stomach then eat some oatmeal just before i workout? My goal is to lose bodyfat but I want to do it right. I have heard people do their cardio in the am on an empty stomach, then eat a baked potato or oatmeal a few min. before they do their weight training. Your thoughts? :afro:

I think you've got the right idea. Maybe try doing cardio then eating and then lift. Only problem the eating part.....

I will give it a try, seems to be a good idea. So youlike the red bellied pirhanas ot the black ones? I had 3 red bellied pacus...love those babies..very sweet but very mean looking! hehehe

dont do cardio right before a workout, make sure you have time to rest and eat. you dont wanna wear yourself our for your lifting. i usually lift, then run. thats just me though.

i would love to be able to go do cardio inthe am on an empty stomach then come back at night to workout, just kinda hard to do that right now. but i may have to make the time.

never do cardio beofre lifiting..that is a surefire way to shrink and drop any muscle you may have..

why not get up have a pro shake and some oats..hit the weights and then after that do cardio..after lifitng for an hour or so your glyco levels willbe low and the cardio will be effective..

eating 7 times a day doesnt mean anything..i can eat wendys and pizza 10 times a day lol..if you arent dropping weight make ur diet cleaner and/or cut some cals

I am fully aware of this. My diet is clean, no fast food at all. I have a pre contest type diet. If you would like to look at it and give me some pointers I would be very happy to PM it to you. Thanks everyone for your help on this. I will get up in the am and eat then go lift weights...then cardio for 45min. Now, 1 last question...after I workout for an hour then I will be doing 45 min cardio..I assume I will need a PWO meal...any suggestions? I live 30 min from the gym, can it wait till I get home or should I have a protein drink and oatmeal on the way home? My schedule will look like this...up at 515am, eat at 530am..6am to 7am workout...7am to 745am cardio. after that I am open to eat anytime. Suggestions? :rockband:

I just did a post on this... what about cardio on an empty stomach vs. eating... first thing in the morning.. .does anyone know which one is better...
thanks

It is best to train whether it be cardio or wieghts on an empty stomach. This way you can achieve a much better blood flow to your muscles rather than a shared blood flow with your stomach and muscles.Just be sure to eat as much as you can afterwards and you will feel more tired than usual so have a little nap or something. You should find that this will work quite good.
Your natural testosterone levels are higher in the morning but then again you are still tired and wouldnt have eaten nothing for the whole night.Your test levels also raise again around 5-7 in the afternoon. If you chose to train at this time then you wont be tired, you will have a high level of test and your body will be full of nutrients from previous meals.Make sure you feel hungry before you train to get the best benefit.

To the original poster - your problem is that you say you are gaining size and strength, but your stomach isn't shrinking. That's because you are eating enough to grow. If you want to lose your stomach, you have to be in a calorie deficit.

Never do cardio on an empty stomach. At least have a protein shake or something beforehand. Never do cardio before lifting either.
