I was quite hesitant to start cycling but frankly it is so worth it. Even if you don't ever compete, the confidence, quality of life, just everything is worth it. Your workouts are pretty well always amazing, you actually see continual progress in the mirror. And as long as you are responsible and knowledgeable about what you are doing and have your bases covered you're not risking your health.
The media demonizes it due to ignorance and idiots that abuse. Fact is cycling is just a complete other world. Takes your physique to a different level.
