Boxing as Cardio

Guys,

I am currently doing 45 mins on the bike tues and 45 mins on the crosstrainer on a weds but i now have the oppourtunity to do an hour session of pad work with a boxing trainer - would you say this is a better form of cardio for burning fat and keeping muscle then the bike or cross trainer??

I second that... being an amature champion for some years, i feel there is no substitute for a real boxing regimine. between the aerobic and anaerobic workouts....wow! once you get used to the routine, throw on a sauna suit...lbs will melt off. also throw in skipping rope!

i would continue regular cardio regiment along side the boxing as you probably won't be doing jsut cardio with the boxing trainer.. and if can only benefit you both ways in boxing and in your workout.

The boxing training i will be doing is once a week and will most likely consist of 10 - 15 mins on the rope and 45 mins pad work.

How long do people that have boxing experience reckon it will take me to be fairly good with the combo's, increasing punching power etc.. as i am a pretty athletic guy, was good at most sports, fairly good rugby player etc.. but no boxing background?

that really depends on the instruction...how well they form the routine around your strengths/weaknesses. but fighting is a primal instinct where those moves and actions should come natural to a person after only a limited time of 'polishing'. I have trained a number of different people; ranging from small to tall, fat to skinny, fast to slow, and they all picked up at a relative similar pace...alot of the info you learn with the instruction, practice at home in front of a mirror.

like powerstroke said...dont use boxing as your only cardio...throw in biking, ellipticals, running, swimming, etc...here and there to switch it up.

any martial art where u do good padwork etc is an awesome workout, just not those ones where u stand in lines and pretend to kick people...thats a bit shit

Agreed.

You may be able to tailor down your other cardio some but I wouldn't eliminate it all together. By tailor down I only mention that due to if you are lifting to get big then I've personally found that too much cardio does take away from gaining size and strength.

The boxing itself can be insane. On our pad work days I fear doing it but love it when I'm done. Sweating from head to foot, out of breath and unable to hold my arms up; shoulders killing me. And like boxers, skipping rope is an excellent addition for cardio training.

if you have access to a heavy bag and/or speed bag jump on those as well! the heavy bag allows you 'freestyle' and to go at your own pace. the speedbag helps with hand-eye coordination and rhythm.

indrid...i'm also a hard gainer and wouldnt trade my boxing training in conjunction with weight training for nothin. The boxing supplemented my weights perfectly (once i learned the appropriate ratios and timing of each). I fought 132 and carried a frame which made most people think i weight ~150. quick, powerfull, lean, and full of endurance....if only i didnt suffer a career ending shoulder injury....damn baseball!

pasisano-- Out of chi town huh? cahmpion? as in state, regional,National? gotta love thoes park districts in chi without having to record any fights into the book lol...

I was Chi Golden Gloves Champ in 06 and dislocated my shoulder in the semis at National's. I took private lessons, didnt do any park district 'book skimming'. fought a few of them though...loved beating them. You fight?

i dont think it would help bodybuilding wise

i always wished to do mma or boxing my only fear is it affecting my gains cause i am a hardgainer and barely gain any mass

My personal experience, if you are body building then any cardio especially cardo like this will diminish your results. If you are weight training then it won't be as bad but still will see diminished results.

Don't mistake what I'm saying because if you are a fighter then weight training can make you better as a supplement. It depends on your focus; your goals.

Hard to be the master of both worlds so you either focus on one or the other or find a balance. While the balance sounds the best realize that you will never excel in either thus reaping the results if you did one or the other.
