My gym recently added some big ass chains to the arsenal they weigh about 20lbs each and guys are hooking them on to the bar when benching , I have never seen that , is my gym just slow to catch on or is this at everybodys gym ?

we have them at our gym as well, for all the powerlifters

This is new to me, we used to have chains at myn.. but they turned into more of a social place.
I never got to use them.. people used to use them mainly for dips.. used to put the chain around there hips and add a 40lbs plate

chains work very well for some people , especially powerlifters who use bench press shirts . that being said lets face it the gym can get boring after several years so even if you dont powerlift chains can add a little fun and break the monotony.

adjusting the chains length is the key imo . if they are adjusted right when you reach the top of the bench press there is just enough chain still hanging on the ground to keep the chains from swinging around . if the chains are swinging around they are too short . after you get the hang of chains dont be afraid to add more chains / weight . you will have to put less weights on the bar and build up speed at the bottom to overcome the increasing weight as the chains come off the floor and the chain weight goes up.
