I rarely got physical with my kids because I preferred taking away privledges.I did this because I had abusive step father. He beat my ass every chance he could because I was smarter and a better athlete then his kids.He tried everything he could do bring me down.He actually told me this when I was beating his ass and demanding answers.
Everything came to a head one day when I was 16 and big enough to defend myself.I was 6'3" 165 lbs and he was mid 40's 5'9" 150 lbs.He punched me in the face and pulled a handful of hair out of my head because I refused to work on his farm for free anymore.Long story short I put his face through the drywall in our family room and jumped up and down on his chest and head until he was unconscious.I probably would have killed him if a neighbor didn't hear my Mom screaming and ran over and tackled me off of him.I broke several ribs and gave him a brain injury that still effects him to this day.
He tried to get me locked up but all charges were dropped after my now deceased uncle who was a big time dope dealer in Detroit stressed to him that he wouldn't live to testify in court against his favorite nephew.
I moved out of state to live with my Dad after that.
With the help of my wife who came from a loving non abusive family we were able to raise our boys without repeating the cycle of abuse.I let her lead the way and I was just a firm steady figure when the boys attempted to steam roll their Mom like most boys will do in their teens. The boys have seen me fight before and in the back of their mind knew it was best to listen without me having to hit them.A crazy look did the trick when Mom needed some back up.
