Does a Squat Belt help prevent injury?

Who is Mike Jones?

Had a NASTY muscle pull in my lower back on September of 05 doing squats that put me on my back unable to walk for about a week. Every since then I have been hesitant to do heavy squats for that reason. It was just a muscle pull and no slipped or blown discs. Am I less likely to have pulled muscles in my back if using a squat belt properly?

If I'm going to failure I use a belt. Other subfailure sets I don't as I want to make sure that my low back muscles are still stabilizing the weight to ensure they don't become weak. However, if you're also doing exercises like deads, SLD or good mornings...you could probably wear a belt during all your squating sets to give you peace of mind.

its all a personal preference. Me personally i go by feel , when i go heavy sldls and heavy rack pulls i go w\ a belt.

A belt will help you keep your back tight and straight, so it will help prevent such injuries.

Of course lower back work and ab work are important as well.

I got a double prong inzer, fucking hate the thing its just too hard to put on and take off. Wish I had a lever.
i love my lever belt , ive had it 8-10 years i guess and wont go back to prongs.

a belt will not help prevent injuries-if your form goes it doesnt matter what you are wearing a belt, suit, wraps etc..

Why the fuck did you get a doulbe prong instead of a single prong? Unless you bought their economy belt.

Sell me your double prong for a deal and buy yourself a lever belt.

And steroids don't make you gain muscle if you don't eat and train.

IMO, if you injure yourself in training without a squat belt, it means:
1) your training for a PL comp OR

2) your abs are too weak

if your not a PL who's looking to up his maxes, then IMO you should strengthen your abs and learn to squat without the security of a belt.
