first day squatting off a box

Community Veteran
warmed up with sets of 3 from 45-225 for a total of about 5 or 6 sets and tons of stretching, and this was my workoiut

275 2 sets of 3
315 4 sets of 3 I didn't want to go higher on reps or weight as I was trying to keep the body real tight while getting the power out of my hips. Felt no real quad activity at all, just hams glutes and mostly hips. probalby could have gone up to 365 or higher, but didn't want form to break down. Finished off with

Romanian deadlifts 135x5
225x5
315x5
365x4
405x3 These were kind off tough, forcing that arch tight with that much weight is rough, but i kept the arch good, that was my goal.

pullthroughs 3 sets with the stack at varying reps and stances.

3 sets of calves
some grip work.

jcp2, Very nice numbers, I remember the good ol days of Box Squats, keep it up looking good...

Thanks, it was a bit of a learning experience, i set the box at parallel, or just below, tought to tell with baggy pants, lol. I am going to build some strenght and flexibility from here for a few weeks and drop it down a few inches.

jcp2, Now I only Squat "ass in the grass" with a wide stance, I feel it more on my Quads and my knees no longer hurt...

That is what i am trying to get to, i am tall, so it isn't all that natural for me, but anything can be taught i guess. I get my feet as wide as i can in the power rack when i did these. I am not even going to squat normally for a few months so i can train my body to get in this position.

jcp2, I know this will sound strange but I have not Squated for the last 18 years til this last January training with DC, I started with 135 all the way to the bottom now I am up to 530x5 with a fractured 2nd lumbar from many years ago.

I never thought I would Squat again due to lower back problems but this and Good Mornings seem to help a lot, I did notice before when I did legs not so deep my knees would bother me, now that I hit the bottom on everything Leg Press, Hacks and Squats my knees are fine...

ive read more than once that stopping right at parallel and starting back up was more stressfull on the knee than going below parallel . apparantly exactly at parallel is where the knee joint is at a mechanical disadvantage .

way to go jcp , stick with a moderate weight for a few weeks and really get the form down and get comfortable doing the boxsquats . but then its time to push those numbers up . remember lots of heavy goodmornings in the mean time

Like i said, i definately could have gone higher, just didn't want the form to break down. I actually enjoyed these, they were not that bad. I am going to try to go up every week on these on sets of 3 for a little while, and then drop the box down a few inches.
