How to get past the intial cardio hurdle?

I am just starting starting to train again after a long absence and I am having trouble with cardio. I can suck up the pain with weights and push to muscle failure no problem. But for some reason cardio just stops me dead in my tracks, partly because of my bad knee, every impact feels like getting stabbed just above my kneecap and I also smoked for 17 years like an idiot. I have been Nicotine free for 2 years now and really need to get past this cardio hurdle, I was hoping you guys could give me some suggestions on how to get going on that. Is there a supp i should be taking? A specific exercise or series of exercises? I am desperate here, it's the only thing slowing me down at this point and I need to get to an acceptable level fast so i can work on a total body program and not be limited by sucking wind. I'm 33 and want to be in overall great shape by September (great compared to what my lazy ass has been the past few years at least) So I would appreciate any advice you guys could give me and what i could really use is a knowledgeable workout partner to help kick my ass in the gym. Don't suppose any of you guy live in Salem OR do ya? lol

What about Jack3d or Oxy? Will either of them give me energy, help me to push through my cardio wall?

Doubt it. Pre work out supps are nothing but caffiene laced with nitric oxides or a bunch of other crap so they can jack the price up=. Just take a caffeine tablet from walmart, they cost 5 bucks for a pack. Or drink black coffee

Lift weights in my opinion. If you set your rest intervals to 60 seconds its a great cardio workout. No need for treadmills.

I just started a program with my sister, it's called couch to 5k (C25k). I downloaded it as a free app, it's a three day a week, 30 minute cardio program.

Very basic, but for some reason hearing the voice 'Begin Running' is more motivation than just alternating running and walking on your own.

Give it a shot, if you're starting from the bottom it can only help.

If your gym doesn't have it, join a pool. Swimming is great cardiovascular exercise and is easy on the joints. You can also try some bikes, but take it easy on the resistance as that too can give you really sore and inflamed knees later. I do take preworkout drinks, but I don't think those will necessarily help you with cardio as synephrine and caffeine elevate your heart rate. Take fish oil and a good multivitamin and drink plenty of water. Give it time man, you can't go from being sedentary to an elite athlete overnight. It sucks, but the journey is what makes it all worth it in the end.

My .02c :)

Just got to get out there and get in a routine. Once your used to a set regiment it will be easier to do it.

Sounds like you have a sister like mine... I run with her because she's my sister, not because I'm a runner by any means. lol

Do it til it stops hurting. Don't road run, that's probably the most joint unfriendly exercise there is, next to running on a treadmill because you don't get the same downforce return you do on the road. Elliptical ain't bad, stairmaster is midling, but make them intervals (they call it HIIT now i guess) and your cardio and fat burning will skyrocket if you stick with it.

I ride bike with my son every other day 5-10 miles depending on how I feel. When I first started a year ago it sucked so bad, now we do the same distance but try to go faster. I agree with halfwit on the pool (don't have one near me) the pool will work you hard, started doing laps when I was in better shape (10 years ago usmc) swimming will kick your ass.

Cardio doesn't have to be on a machine. Walk the dog at a fast pace or run with him, swimming as mentioned or biking, take hikes on trails, basketball games, handball games, hill sprints, run sprints in a parking lot, lots and lots of sex lol, etc
