Long term damage and rebound after using T3: myth or fact?

I just came across an interesting article regarding the long term effects -- or lack thereof -- of using T3. Now, I thought that it was pretty well settled that long term T3 usage could permanently screw up your thyroid gland, and that even short term use (at higher doses) can result in a nasty rebound effect, where people gain back all the weight they just lost. This article basically says the opposite: that the thyroid comes back within two or three weeks even after very long cycles at medium to high doses.

I am not really interested in running T3 for a really long time, but I am concerned about the rebound effect. If the author of this article is correct, rebounding should not be a problem as long as you keep your calories low for the short period your body needs to get its own levels back up. What do you guys think?

what up xtinct

my wife has been off for a bit now and has seen no rebound affect and i was off for awhile with no rebound effect either.

we both saw no muscle loss aswell, i am on she is not

we both kept dose at 50 mcgs aday and had great success with fat loss

My wife ramped up to a high daily dosage of 125mcg/ED. She did not ramp down properly due to poor planning and definitely experienced a rebound. She gained the weight she lost and she had symptoms of poor thyroid function like feeling cold all the time. So the rebound theory is a fact and not a myth, but maybe lower dosages like House ran or a proper ramp up/down would get around that.

house: that sounds promising. How long were you on the T3? I have been on 25 mcg for the last two weeks, and things have been going fairly well, but I was thinking about going up to 50mcg for the remainder of my cutting cycle (another 4-5 weeks). I am also thinking about starting my wife on a low dose (25 or 50) because although she is making great progress in terms of strength, she has a harder time dropping the fat. Also, did you use pills or liquid? I normally prefer pills, but there are some really good deals on liquid T3, so I am tempted to give it a try.

muscle_geek: sorry to hear it didn't work for your wife. How long was she on that high dose, and for how long did she have those symptoms after she stopped? And how was her diet during the time when she regained the weight? In other words, do you think she could have avoided regaining the weight if she had been eating differently?

I went no higher than 75mcg a day and I dropped from 213 down to 187 and I was also running a keto diet and now I tip the scale at 193 so I believe those 6lbs were water weight from the keto diet. As long as you continue to eat well I believe you should be alright!

xtinct, i was on for 8 weeks my wife was aswell

i am currently back on at 25mcgs aday

i use tiromel [pills] bro

great stuff

I once ran 50 mcg t3/day for 5 wks off cycle with clen alternating NYC, lost some fat while actually gaining slight muscle (strength at least), with a slight gain in fat on the rebound. I believe my constant protein intake actually helped me to gain slight muscle (increased protein intake) although I did experience a slight rebound. I would definately do it again. Have had no exp. with the higher doses.

hey guys! I have done 2 t3 cycles. both 8 weeks with first week ramping up n last week ramping down, max dose was 125 mcg. relusts were great. both times lost 15 lbs. but the rebound effect was terrible! my diet is clean all the time, no cheat meals, about 1700-2000 calories a day, low carb. I work out 6 times a week. crossfit. I noticed the rebound the second week i was off. and in a month i gained 15 lbs back! Like every morning I visibly had more fat! Now it's been a month since I stopped the cycle and I gained all the weigh I lost back n my weight gain doesn't stop. one week after the end of cycle my t3 n t4 were low ( blood test) but now they r normal (got results yesterday) and I still keep packing on weight at a scary rate. I really don't know what to do. I took 6 months off before first and second cycle and gained more than I lost. So I guess I'll wait two more weeks ( which will make it 6 weeks break) and start t3 again. I really need your ideas guys!!!

Nonsense. I will find and post a study from years ago that totally dispells this as a reality. A HUGE study.

Compliments of the late Nandi:

"In 1951, Greer reported the pattern of recovery of thyroid function after stopping suppressive treatment with thyroid hormone in euthyroid [normal] subjects based on sequential measurements of their thyroidal uptake of radioiodine. He observed that after withdrawal of exogenous thyroid therapy, thyroid function, in terms of radioiodine uptake, returned to normal in most subjects within two weeks. He further observed that thyroid function returned as rapidly in those subjects whose glands had been depressed by several years of thyroid medication as it did in those whose gland had been depressed for only a few days" (3)

These results have been subsequently verified in several studies.(3)(4) So contrary to what has been stated in the bodybuilding literature, there is no evidence that long term thyroid supplementation will somehow damage your thyroid gland.

Ill dig up the referenced studies.

Thank you Jimi. It is a very persistent myth that T3 causes rebound or can cause damage to the thyroid gland. However, it is a well established FACT that this myth is entirely wrong.

What are you saying is rebound myth? The quoted study said "He observed that after withdrawal of exogenous thyroid therapy, thyroid function, in terms of radioiodine uptake, returned to normal in most subjects within two weeks." Waiting 2wks for your endogenous thyroid production to go back to normal would cause some rebound in weight gains unless a dietary change was made no?

Just do some meth for the two weeks while your thyroid recovers, rebound shouldn't be a problem.

I agree bro. Im not dissing any ves but my hpta is far as I will go as far as interrupting a perfectly running system to appease my b d d. No disrespect anyone but I hear young cats talking and they are not even aas qualified enough to be doing this....or frikken slin. Kids are really trashing themselves...recklessly I m o.
