Pain above knee squatting

When I go down to squat I'm getting pain just above my left knee. It feels like something is about to snap, it really hurts. So I cut out the squats and did leg ext/curls and stuff and didnt have any problems. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Successful squats:

push your knees out.
go to full depth. if you don't, you're putting all strain on your knees.
wear olympic lifting shoes. you need the platform if it's a big squat (this is a preference thing... it works way better for me).

Optionally:
wrap your knees

How big a squat is this? Ever had an injury in that knee?

Are you taking fish oil?

form. going as deep as you can if your form is wrong can still put alot of strain on your knee. feet flat, sit back, neutral back, toes pointed either slightly out or straight ahead, focus on pushing knees out on the ascent, look ahead, pushing outward with feet, distributing weight evenly throughout the foot. if it is a bad pain i would stay away from squat depending on your goals. you a powerlifter, bodybuilder, just working out for overall physical fitness? you can build a nice set of wheels without backsquats or front squats, if throwing up a big amount of weight isn't your overall goal. this pain hits you when doing back squats i presume, so try front squats with a lighter weight, or bulgarian squats with 50% of your backsquat 1rm. you should put up more reps like this thus working the leg better and putting less strain on your back, could help rehab the knee. also wrap your knees like ardbeg said, but i would see a doctor and make sure it's nothing serious. maybe take some time off the legs for a week or 2 and come back light, see if it still bothers you, not worth risking it man
